"What do you believe?" Bain asked. "You've heard rumours, but what do you really think is going on?"

Slade gave him a measured look. "I think we should watch for trouble. I think it could come in any form, and at any time." He paused before he added, "Someone tried to kill me two nights ago."

My lips dropped apart in surprise.

Bain looked no less taken aback. "Who?"

Slade made an 'I don't know' gesture with his hands. "I didn't get a chance to ask questions. My guards killed all six of them before I could."

"Six?" Knox made a low whistle. His brow creased in a deep frown.

"Yes." Slade fixed Bain with a steady look. "Did you send them? Or Dex?"

"No," Bain said firmly. "I didn't." He said nothing about Dex. "Why would we come all this way if we had?"

"To make sure the job was done?" Slade suggested. "To put him in place as Watcher?" He nodded toward Knox.

Knox held up his hands. "If there's any plan to make me Watcher, I'm not aware of it."

"It makes sense," Bain said slowly.

Knox blinked at him. "What?"

"If you're here, you'd be too busy to try to overthrow Devlin," Bain said.

"I'm not planning to overthrow my brother," Knox said darkly.

"Maybe we could stop arguing between ourselves," I said firmly.

The guys looked at each other, then looked away.

Bain shrugged. "I know Knox isn't planning anything, but that doesn't mean someone else isn't."

"They can't make me Watcher without my consent," Knox said firmly.

"If Slade was dead, and it was offered, would you say no?" Bain asked.

"Slade isn't dead," Slade said. "And I don't intend to be dead for a long, long time." He cocked his head at Knox. "Would you say yes?"

Knox threw up his hands. "Maybe all they want is to create a divide between us all."

"I'd say they're doing that pretty well," I remarked.

Knox nodded. "Viva is right. What do we really know about any of this?"

"Foxes, tigers, and bears attacked the Keeper's Residence, and us," I said.

"Oh my," Wesley said softly.

I almost forgot he was sitting there, but now I smiled slightly. That faded when I added, "And a demigod is on the loose."

"And there's a chance the Alpha's wife is in on a plot of some kind," Bain said.

"Now who is speaking treason?" Slade asked.

Bain looked unapologetic. "Viva, do you think Comus is involved in any way?"

From the corner of my eye, I caught Slade flinch, but when I looked at him square on, he was composed.
