"It's hard to be alone in a place like this," I pointed out. What did he mean exactly? I didn't need someone to watch my every move. A girl liked a few minutes alone here and there.

"But not impossible," Dex said. A smile tugged at the corners of his mouth. He was thinking about him and I being alone, I saw it in his eyes.

"I'll see to it she has a guard with her at all times," Bain said.

"You?" I asked without thinking.

One of his eyebrows twitched. "Me and others I trust with your safety. Kerina for one."

"Right." That was okay then. I liked Kerina, and as far as I knew, she didn't want to sleep with me. If I spent every hour with Bain… Something was bound to happen. Which I was totally okay with. Bring it on.

Dex knelt down beside my chair and cupped my cheek with his hand.

"I'll make sure nothing bad happens to you, no matter what I have to do to ensure your safety," he said softly.

"Even though I released a potential god-killing god into the wild?" I asked. His hand felt so nice. Gentle, warm, soothing. I wanted him to curl his fingers through my hair and drag my mouth to his.

Instead, he looked me in the eyes. "You didn't have a choice. Even if you had, you didn't know what might happen."

"Yeah, I guess so," I said. "I mean, he spun some story about giving everyone their freedom. I thought he might do good." Figures a guy would sweet talk his way out of trouble, then show his true colours. It happened all the time. Oldest trick in the gods damned book.

"Although, who's to say killing Hades is a bad thing?" I intended the question for everyone in the room, but my eyes were on Dex. Damn, being this close to him made my heart race like crazy. Was the room running low on air or was it him making me breathless? Honestly, I couldn't rule out either one these days, but I think it was the latter. The scent of him was better than wine. I could get drunk on it and die happy.

"He mentioned wanting to kill Hecate too," I said. "The witches wouldn't want that."

Kerina muttered something that sounded like, "Maybe we should let him."

I couldn't tear my eyes from Dex to look at her.

"Maybe," Dex said softly, his gaze hot on mine. He blinked and the moment passed. "You've had a long journey, you should get some rest."

Reluctantly, he stood and moved away, leaving me feeling like a part of me was gone.

"Areyou going to watch me have a bath?" I smiled at Bain and hoped I looked seductive, not desperate. With my luck, I probably looked ridiculous.

He responded with a twitch of one side of his mouth. That was enough to tell me I got to him with my question.

"You could join me," I added.Please. He could wash my back. I could wash his cock. With my mouth. Okay, maybe some soap first. Dex was right, it was a long journey back here. Did I dare say 'home'? We all smelled of dust and sweat.

"As tempting as that is…" he said.

He left that hanging long enough for me to know he actually was tempted.

Interesting.

"I have to see to a few things. Make sure the barracks didn't fall apart in my absence." The twitch was gone, replaced by a frown.

"Is that likely?" I asked. I walked with him to the Sanctuary and frowned when he opened the door and gestured me inside. I was perfectly capable of opening the door myself.

"I left Dex unsupervised for the better part of two months," he said slowly. "Anything is possible."

I snorted a laugh. "You did once say he gets bored sometimes."

Bain inclined his head, just once. "He does. Sometimes he likes to rearrange things, to keep us on our toes."
