My eyes got heavier. Consciousness was slowly slipping away, but I clung to it like a sheer cliff face.

"Someone else?" Who else was there? My mind was too muddled to think straight anymore. My body desperately wanted to give in to sleep.

"Shhh, get some rest." She raised her glass to her lips and drank.

I frowned. What was she doing? She would put herself to sleep.

The glass tumbled from her hand, spilling wine all over the carpet. Devlin was going to be angry when he woke up.

So was I. There was nothing worse than stains on expensive carpet. Except being drugged.

I caught a glimpse of Gwendolyn slumping in her chair before my eyes shut. Bitch was covering her tracks. Whoever found us here would assume she was drugged, along with the Alpha and me.

Crafty. I almost admired her. Almost. I didn't know what she was up to, or what I would find when I awoke. The only thing I knew for certain is that she told me a lot about her plans. A little knowledge was a dangerous thing, especially if she decided later she didn't want me to share.

I could barely think, but I couldn't conceive a scenario where Devlin and I got out of this alive. Why not kill us both and be done with it?

Hades, if you're listening, I'd love to wake up from this and not have everything go to shit while I nap. Then I'd really love some answers.

Questions, I had plenty of those. Too many.

I heard voices coming closer and tried to call out. The only sound I made was a gurgling gasp.

"They're just in here," Kerina said.

Be careful,I thought in her direction, knowing she wouldn't hear me. With any luck, she would sense that something was wrong before it was too late.

"Shit," she swore.

I guessed she found us.

"Back off," she told someone. "What are you—"

Everything went black.

The Watcher was notwhat I expected. For one thing, he was the first guy I saw in the Vault with an eyebrow piercing. For another, I had imagined someone who lurked in the shadows, always watching. Like, you know, a watcher. Maybe I got that mixed up with pervert. Whatever.

Slade pushed his glasses up his nose with a tattooed hand. The tip rim almost hid his piercing.

His glasses slid right back down the moment he lowered his hand.

"Did I hear you right, Bain?" He sat on a chair, long legs apart. His knees were visible through rips in his jeans. "You think I'm doingwhat?"

Bain looked unrepentant and unruffled as always. He crossed his arms over a chest twice the size of Slade's.

"Did you send other shifters to attack the Alpha and the Keeper?" Bain said again, slower, as if he thought Slade didn't comprehend.

Slade pushed his glasses back up and waved a hand. "Yes, yes I heard you. I just can't believe you're asking something like that."

"Bloodstone Point has a history of trying to rebel against the rest of the Vault," Bain said coolly.

Slade's eyebrows rose and his glasses slid down again. "I'm aware. I've studied the history of the Vault extensively. While you were learning to kill people, I was learning about our past."

"You haven't denied it," Bain pointed out.
