"I made a dragon scale glow," I said slowly. "Does that count?"

Dex glanced at Bain in surprise.

Bain nodded. "That was all, or I would have mentioned it." To me, he said, "Power senses power, and dragons are more powerful than most, in a way. They don't use it in any way we recognise, but I've heard witches can make them react like that."

"Was it some kind of test?" I demanded. "You wanted to see if I could do that?"

Bain and Dex exchanged a glance. "Sort of," Bain admitted. "We knew you had power, but I was curious if the scale might become something of an artefact if it came into contact with you."

"I just thought of it as a gift," Dex said lightly.

Kerina snorted with amusement.

"Potentially a dangerous gift," Knox said, his expression now dark.

"Luckily I'm harmless," I said tartly.

"You're anything but harmless," Knox said. "I've seen you in action, remember?"

"Right. When I helped to wake a demigod." Before Comus rubbed his cock against my leg. Dudes should not go around making promises unless they planned to keep them. I hadn't seen him since, so I had no idea what his intentions were right now. What would I do if he popped up later and wanted to screw me?

Honestly, I had no idea. On one hand, he killed a woman in front of my eyes and imprisoned Luther.

On the other hand, they deserved it.

Shit, I really needed to have some time alone with my vibrator if I was thinking this way.

"You're not someone to get on the wrong side of," Dex said.

"Tell that to the Witches' Council," I said. That led me to ask, "Do you think there really is a Hemitheos Council? If the others were anything to go by, they're much more dangerous than I am." And a whole lot more pissed off. They lived in the Vault for the most part. At least as far as I was able to tell.

"There is," Knox said, his voice low and reluctant, as if the Alpha might hear him from wherever he was. "Helene mentioned it several times, but not where they might be located. She…" He hesitated. "She didn't seem as invested in them as she was in freeing Comus. I suspect she had hopes of returning with him by her side and ruling over the council."

"And the rest of the Vault," Kerina said.

When everyone looked at her, she added, "In theory. We wouldn't go down that easily."

"No," Bain agreed. "We wouldn't." His jaw worked for a moment before he said, "I've sent agents into the city to listen for whispers of trouble."

When Dex looked questioning, Kerina said, "We met a bard, along with an assassin and her daughters. Both assassins in training. Wesley seems to think it's some kind of adventure, but Latika, Aisha, and Erin should give us useful information if they hear any."

Dex rubbed his chin. "A bard and three assassins. My payroll is about to blow out, isn't it?"

Bain gave one of his almost-but-not-quite-a-smile looks and nodded. "I would think so, yes." He didn't seem even slightly sorry. "It's necessary with the unrest all around us."

Dex sighed. "Fine, but I want to meet your spies. Sooner rather than later. It's been a long time since we had a bard in my Residence and I'm tired of the same old CDs."

I choked back a laugh. "CDs? You guys really are living in the dark ages. Don't you stream music?"

"The bubble around the Vault screws with the internet," Dex said. "It's almost impossible to download anything."

"Wow. On one hand we're safer here. On the other, no cat videos." I grimaced. "That's true depravity right there." No porn either.

"And so we have CDs and books instead," Dex said patiently. "And practice sword fighting."

I shook my head sadly. "That is so fucked up." I was mostly joking. The world outside the Vault wasn't that great. Here, I was appreciated, even if I sometimes felt like Dex's favourite new toy. One he hadn't played with much, worse luck.

"We practice with bows and arrows too," Dex said, a glint of mischief in his eye.
