"I thought you might," I said. My balls clenched at the idea.

"Yes," he said slowly. "You aren't the first. You won't be the last. I'm sure you noticed we don't get along like we used to."

I decided the wisest thing I could do right now was keep quiet.

The Alpha went on. "It's a problem. We can't make an heir if she acts frigid around me."

I was almost certain he was equally uninterested in screwing her, but of course he'd deflect the blame fully on Gwendolyn.

"I'm sure the doctors will be able to help," I said uncertainly. "They have ways of making babies without two people even meeting."

"Yes, but shifters might be too different," he pointed out. "If they can't do anything…" He shook his head. "I'll have to find someone who can satisfy my needs." He seemed to have someone in particular in mind. "I need an heir. It's taken too long already. We risk conflict."

Strange words from a man who seemed to relish conflict.

He looked over at me sharply. "If you share a word of this with anyone, even Dex, you'll wish I only had you castrated."

"Yes, Alpha," I said quickly. "Not a word. I'm sure Dex—"

"Would be happy to step into the role?" Devlin suggested.

"I wasn't going to say that." Honestly, I wasn't sure what I was going to say.

"Knox then?" Devlin asked.

"Sir…"

He waved a hand. "I know. You have your loyalty and don't want to end up lunch for a sand dragon. That's why I want you to go to the Watcher. You and Knox. And that witch of yours."

"Viva isn't a witch," I argued.Or mine.

"Close enough," the Alpha said. "Take her and keep a close eye on her. We can use her power. And if we can't, we don't want anyone else to. Understood?"

I swallowed. "Yes, sir. She's on our side."

"For now. Things change." Devlin gave me an appraising look. "Find a way to ensure that doesn't happen. Bind her to you. You or Knox, I don't care which. Both if you need to keep her close and make sure she wants to stay there."

"I'll do what I can," I assured him. Was he telling me to seduce her? I wanted to do that anyway, but if it was his order and she found out, my balls would be back in a vice.

He clapped me on the shoulder. "I know you will. I wish the rest of my people were as compliant and loyal as you are. Most of them would have fucked Gwendolyn and prayed I never found out."

I couldn't deny that. He was likely right, depending on the person. I doubted the Keeper or Knox would touch a hair on her body either.

"I prefer not to live on the edge like that," I said evenly.

"I've heard that," Devlin said. He reached into his pocket and pressed something into the palm of my hand. "Here, buy a night with an Intimate or two. Even guards need to let off some steam from time to time."

"Uh, thanks." I accepted the token and pressed it into my pocket. I would pass it on to someone else when I had the chance. I didn't need an Intimate when I had my hand, and thoughts of Viva. Granted, I would prefer to have her mouth sliding up and down my cock, but I would do whatever I had to do to get by, including remembering the Alpha's words. If she would let down her guard and allow me to get close, then maybe my wildest fantasies could come to reality.

Just the thought of it made my balls throb. I would have to do whatever I could to keep them intact too, or my imagination would be all I would ever have.

I stopped outside the Alpha's door. Both guards were still in place, and neither had hair or uniform out of place.

I gave them a nod and eased the Alpha's door open for him.

The first thing that hit me was the smell of blood.
