My life expectancy would be a lot shorter if I got the Alpha's wife pregnant.

Or would it? She and Devlin might pretend the child was his. The Vault would get its heir. Whispers of sedition would die down.

Even thinking any of this was ridiculous. I had no intention of touching Gwendolyn, even with the Alpha's blessing, which he would never give. He'd sooner let Dex, or his brother, father the heir.

On the other hand, that would create a whole different set of problems. If anyone learnt of it, they could easily throw their support behind the Keeper or Knox. A convenient accident or execution would remove Devlin from the equation. The Vault would have a new Alpha, with a ready made heir.

No, someone anonymous, but in a position of trust made more sense. Someone who would keep his mouth shut.

Someone like me.

I struggled to keep the grimace off my face. If that was the plan, the Alpha would have to find someone else. My heart and my cock only had eyes for Viva. Although, I was almost certain she didn't feel the same way. She likely hated my guts after I helped Helene kidnap her. That was fair enough; I would be pissed as well.

It was still safer to care about someone who didn't care about you than it was to screw the Alpha's wife. This way I got to keep my balls intact.

I hoped.

"I can recommend a few nice restaurants if you do go to the outside world," Dex said to Devlin.

Viva looked at him in surprise.

He gave her a lopsided smile. "What? Did you think I never left the Vault?"

"I suppose I did think that," she said. Her cheeks turned an adorable shade of pink. "Why would you leave?"

"The outside world has better burgers," Dex replied.

I wasn't sure if he was joking or not, but she laughed. Damn it, her smile made me want to hug her and fuck her at the same time. No woman should be that gorgeous.

She glanced up at me, the smile still on her face.

My heart skipped and I had to force myself to nod and look away. She was smart enough to notice if my feelings showed on my face. Hades, she could probably smell it on me.

"Noted," Devlin said slowly. "That one you recommended on the Sydney Harbour foreshore didn't disappoint."

"Great," Dex replied. "Good to know you didn't have to go bad wolf on the chef."

Devlin smiled slowly. "No, I spared them this time." He looked wistful.

"Oh, not this again," Calista groaned. "You're not going to conquer the outside world. It's too big and would provoke a war with the witches."

Devlin pouted, but he didn't argue. This time.

I suspected he'd never forget that ambition, but hopefully he wouldn't try to act on it. We had enough going on already.

"Are you saying we wouldn't win?" Dex asked over his glass.

"Dexter Joseph Breakwater," Calista scolded. "Don't encourage the boy." After a beat, she added, "Of course we would, but too many would die to do it."

"Now who is doing the encouraging?" Dex asked. A grin played around the corners of his mouth.

For her part, Viva looked horrified. I wanted to reassure her this kind of talk was normal for these meetings. Nothing ever came of it.

I offered her a hint of a smile, but I wasn't sure if she saw it.

"Devlin knows better than to listen to a silly old woman," Calista said tartly.

"You're not old," Dex told her. After she made a face at him, he added, "Or silly."
