"Would you though?" he asked. He cocked his head and silently challenged me to deny it.

I mulled that over, then said, "Yes, almost certainly." Okay, probably not. I was lost pretty deep in my thoughts. "What are you anyway? If you flew, you might be a mosquito or a dragon." I was ninety-nine percent sure he was neither of those things.

When he didn't answer, I went on. "If you bounced, you might be a kangaroo, or a rabbit." I grinned slowly. "You're a rabbit, aren't you? Go on, admit it."

He chuckled. "I'm not a rabbit. Or a kangaroo, although that would be fun. I'm just a wolf like a lot of the shifters here. I happen to be good at climbing."

"All part of the job?" I guessed.

He shrugged one shoulder. "Something like that, yeah."

"Should I start leaving my doors locked at night?" I glanced toward them.

"You'd need more than a lock to keep me out if I wanted to come in." He looked smug.

"That doesn't surprise me one bit," I said. "You seem to have a long list of skills." Some of which I wanted to try out some day.

"I have a few," he agreed.

"Nowyou're modest," I teased.

He glanced toward the analogue clock on the wall. The second hand seemed to race around the face like it was late for something.

"We should go," he said. "The Alpha will be here soon."

"Let me guess, the penalty for being late is being thrown to the sand dragons." I made a face.

"Sand dragon if you're lucky," Knox said.

I wasn't sure if he was joking or not.

"If I'm not lucky?" Did I want to know?

"Let's not find out." He opened the door and peered out into the corridor. "Okay, come on."

I moved quickly to walk beside him. The guards Bain assigned moved in behind us and followed.

I didn't like the idea of having people I didn't know behind me. I glanced at Knox's face. He didn't seem worried.

"Is Knox your first or last name?" I asked. I realised I didn't know that about Bain either.

He glanced at me. "First."

"What's your last name?"

He hesitated. "Longwood."

I snorted. "No, really, what is it?"

"It's really Longwood," he insisted. "And yes, it's accurate."

I glanced toward his groin speculatively. As far as I could tell, he was right. With Hades' blessing, I might find out some day.

"So, Knox Longwood, what is Bain's last name?"

With no hesitation this time, Knox said, "Johnson."

I stared for a moment, then laughed. "Figures. He reminds me of a rock sometimes."
