I scratched the side of my head. "They worked to free the god Comus from a sarcophagus Hades and Hecate imprisoned him in. He's kinda pissed about being locked away. Now one ofthem,Luther, is locked away and another is dead."

I struggled to get the image of Luther's face, as he was lowered into his prison, out of my mind. Helene's death and transformation into Comus' ghostly servant was no less horrific. I hated the bitch. But no one deserved that.

If they had known what would happen to them, would Comus still be trapped? If they had any brains, they would have left him right where he was. He'd be imprisoned and they'd be getting on with their lives.

Until he found more powerful suckers to let him out.

"According to Helene, there's an Hemitheos Council," I added. "They may or may not want to take over the Vault. Or the world." I shrugged.

"They seem to be the cause for the whispers of dissent in the south," Bain said.

"And the Watcher may or may not be causing trouble in the north," Kerina said. She turned her head and cocked it until her red braid fell over her shoulder. "Maybe Knox can enlighten us."

Knox's hair had grown in the last few weeks. It now hung over one eye. He didn't brush it off before he spoke. "I'm not at liberty to say anything until I speak to the Alpha in person." He worked as a spy for the Alpha, who I had yet to meet. Knox's loyalty was with him, but he didn't try to hide his attraction to me.

If the situation put us on opposite sides, I didn't know whose he would take. That made me anxious. It was a problem for later, so I pushed it aside for now and prayed to Hades it wouldn't come to that. I liked Knox as much as I liked everyone else in the room. All of them were shifters—mortal enemies of witch kind—but I trusted them more than any of the paranormals I grew up with.

Tainted blood, my ass. I was too awesome for them to handle.

Dex narrowed his eyes at Knox. "I am the Alpha's voice here in the city." As Keeper of the Vault, he was second only to the Alpha. Slade, the Watcher, led in the north and was third in power.

At least, that was how it went, in theory. A lot of the shifters seemed to want Dex to take charge. Others wanted him gone, because he formed a tentative alliance with the Witches's Council.

The witches themselves probably wanted him dead, and all the shifters with him.

And now there was a demigod on the loose who wanted two gods dead.

What could go wrong?

Knox held his ground. "I appreciate that, sir."

"Dex is fine," the Keeper said. He wasn't a big fan of formality. Or rather, he liked to put people on the back foot, so they wouldn't see him coming before he cut their throats. Figuratively this time, I hoped.

Knox cleared his throat. "Dex. The Alpha would hang my hide from the city walls if I told you first."

Dex's eyes flashed dangerously. "I might hang your hide if you don't."

He was good at threats, but I wasn't sure if he actually carried out any. Meanwhile, he was kinda hot when he was angry.

The two guys had a staring competition for a few moments before Dex exhaled.

"Fine. The Alpha is due here tonight anyway. Whatever you know can wait until then." His gaze slipped away from Knox and settled on Bain. "Thank you for returning Viva safe and sound. You too, Kerina."

"Knox helped too," I said. I twisted in my chair to give him a smile.

He nodded in response. "It was fortunate Bain told me where to go to find you. If not for that, I'd still be in the Temple, listening to whispers."

"You should go back there," Dex said. He eyed Knox and me. Obviously he saw the look we exchanged between us.

I wasn't sure if I should be mad at his possessiveness or turned on. A bit of both, possibly. I was a grown up hemitheos, I could decide for myself. On the other hand, demigod or not, he could still throw me out of the Vault and leave me to the mercy of the Witches' Council, or the big wide world. Just because I could destroy half a city with the scent I inhaled from those who stood around the room, didn't mean I wasn't vulnerable in other ways.

"If that's where the Alpha sends me, I will," Knox said. "But my sudden disappearance from the Temple will not have gone unnoticed. They'll ask questions if I return without a good reason."

The staring match continued for a few moments more.

Kerina broke the silence by saying, "Why don't you just unzip and compare cock size? I'm sure Viva would like to see them."

See them. Suck them. Yes, I would. But this wasn't about cock size. At least, not as much as it was about power and about me.
