We slipped out onto a street illuminated with streetlights. Too bright for my liking, but shooting out all the bulbs would make too much noise.

"This way," Knox said. He started off down the hill at a trot.

I glanced around for Yard, but I saw no sign of the Dragonesque or his passengers. I started off in the direction Knox led.

A shout came from inside the Residence wall and the sound of running.

"We need to hurry," Latika said.

"Keep to the shadows." I presumed they both knew where Yard took the others.

Knox gave a short nod and ducked into a small park. At this time of day, we shared it with statues of the gods and a few owls, but that was all.

We ducked down lower, and kept close to the trees. Close enough to blend in with the trunks, but not so close we’d knock ourselves out bumping into a branch.

That would suck.

I felt with my senses and hissed to Knox, "They're close."

We all fell into a crouch beside a thick bole. For at least five long minutes, I stayed like that, not moving a muscle. I barely dared to breathe. My hand hovered near the knife and gun, ready to pull one if necessary.

"They're not here," someone said. "They came this way, but now…" They sniffed. Whatever they were, they didn't have the ability of a wolf. Thank Hades for that.

"Keep going down the hill. They must be around here somewhere," someone else said.

They moved away. I let out a breath.

"Come on, we have to get going," I whispered. "They went back to the road. We need to go the other way."

"It will take longer," Knox said.

"Can't be helped." I shrugged.

He responded with a curt nod I barely saw, and rose. "This way then," he said.

I kept my senses open for our pursuers, but they moved out of range.

We slipped out of the park into a smaller street parallel to the one the Residence was on. It wasn't as well lit, and had plenty of hedges perfect for hiding if we needed to.

If we could hide, so could others. We would move carefully.

We reached the end of the road and turned right into a side street.

"Through here." Knox stopped at a small gate. He worked the closing mechanism and pushed the gate open.

I gave him a funny look, but followed him and Latika through before letting the gate shut quietly behind us.

"This is one of the places I stay when I'm in the city," Knox explained. "Only a couple of people know about it."

He pushed open a side door to a small house and stepped inside.

Slade's face was the first I saw, followed by Latika's children. They sat on the opposite side of the room from Kayley, Zeph, and Conor.

I nodded at the Watcher and glanced around.

"Where are the Keeper and Alpha?"

The blank looks I got in response chilled me to my spine.
