I let out a breath of relief.

I motioned for Knox and Latika to follow me. At the same moment, someone shouted.

"Fuck," I said under my breath. I wasn’t surprised, not at all. Sooner or later, someone would see us. At least now the Keeper and the Alpha were safe.

"Stay close," I ordered. I ducked down lower, in case the shout wasn’t about us.

A heartbeat later a group of men rushed out a side door and ran to the wall.

"They went over the top," one said. "Open the gate. We'll search for them out there. Ready your weapons."

The chilling sound of guns sliding out of holsters echoed in the still of early morning.

We hung back in the shadows and crept after Seth's guards. Their faces were all turned forward, or in the direction of the wall. Sooner or later, they would glance back.

That was a chance I had to take.

I signalled with my hand when the guards reached the gate. We dropped back and crouched in the shadows.

"Are you sure about this?" Latika said in my ear. "We could take them all."

Three of us to five of them were pretty good odds, but only if they were shifters. If even one of them was hemitheos, we'd be screwed.

On the other hand, Dex would have time to get further away.

I gave her a nod. "Take the one nearest the gate. Knox, take the two on the end. I'll take the two in the middle." Latika could sweep through them all without blinking, but I needed her able to run if more guards came. We would all have to move quickly if that happened. I couldn’t take the chance of any of us being winded.

"Okay, move," I whispered. I pulled out the knife I'd stashed in the back of my pants, leapt to my feet, and had the blade in the neck of one man before he knew I was there.

I pulled out the blade and ducked as my other target raised his gun.

He got off a shot, but it struck the side of the Residence.

If that left a scar, Dex was going to be pissed.

I lunged at the man, slashing at his arm until he dropped the gun. He grabbed his arm and hissed in pain.

Before he could recover, I lunged again, but he was too quick. He jumped back, out of reach.

I took a step to follow and almost tripped over his gun. I knew there was a reason I wasn't fond of the things.

The man pulled out a knife of his own and smiled. Apparently he thought I was clumsy.

Let him think that.

I pretended to fall, but at the last second, I swiped up the gun and squeezed the trigger.

The shot sounded like thunder, but it got him right in the forehead.

I turned the gun on Knox's second target, taking him in the chest. I winced at the noise, but that was the last of them.

I tucked away the knife and gun, and scooped up another gun from a fallen guard.

"Everyone okay?" I moved toward the gate.

"Yep, but we'll have company soon," Knox said. He had blood on his sleeve, but I couldn't tell who it belonged to. For all I knew, it was there when they broke us out of the cell.

"Without doubt," I said. I pushed the gate open enough for us to squeeze through. I considered closing it behind us, but it would take time, and the trail of bodies would tell which direction we'd gone.
