"I guess so." I couldn't look at her any other way. She was my mother. The one who didn't stop the witches from sending me here. The one who didn't warn me about what I was.

"Who are your parents?" I asked, since he was the one who prodded for questions.

"I have no idea," he replied sadly. "My sister and I were left at Copper Square station. Apparently we came with a letter of explanation, and the clothes we wore. We were taken to the person named in the letter and raised amongst our kind."

"That's awful." My heart hurt for baby Seth, but he looked unruffled.

"It was a long time ago and I don't remember it. Helene and I were better off here anyway, if your story is an indication."

"Helene was your sister," I stated.

"My twin. I know she died during the raising of Comus. I have accepted it. She was dogmatic. She would happily give up everything in the pursuit of her goals, as would I."

"Right." He wasn't wrong about any of that. "Do you know how?"

"Does it matter?" he asked. "Perhaps she went mad and you cut her throat. Perhaps you saw her as a rival for his affection."

I grimaced. "Perhaps he killed her because he's as out of his tree as she was." I decided against telling him her ghost might be following Comus around. Her death would be easier to take than her mostly-death.

"It changes nothing," Seth said after a moment or two of silence. "She is gone and he is risen."

"For better or worse," I said. "I keep expecting him to pop back in and wreak havoc all over the place."

"If he does, I'm sure he'll have good reason for doing so."

Now who was dogmatic? "You won't try to stop him from killing everyone?" I asked. "Even if he wants you dead too?"

"I'll do what's necessary," Seth replied.

That led me to another question. "Is it possible to kill a god?" I thought back to what Comus said about Hades and Hecate.

"Why? Do you want to?" Seth seemed amused at this.

I frowned. "If Comus wants to kill me, I'll defend myself." I didn't think he wanted me dead though. He wanted me alive and writhing underneath him. "I'd like to know if I stand a chance." More than that, I was curious whether or not Comus could carry out his plans.

"If we are children of the gods, then it should be possible," Seth agreed. "Difficult, but possible."

He straightened up. "Enough questions. It's time to resume your testing. We have time before the abdication ceremony."

I started to scream.

Bain

I huffedout a breath and clawed myself awake. How long had I slept? I suspected it wasn’t very long.

I pushed myself up to sit against the wall.

"Hey, sleeping beauty," Kerina said with a smile. "You still snore."

I snorted. "Sorry. You should ask for a better room by yourself next time. Maybe one with a view."

A smile flitted across her lips. "I'll bear that in mind."

"You could have had one." I shifted against the hard stone. There was no way to get comfortable in here. That was the general idea of cells. Who would be deterred from breaking the law if they had a comfortable room to come back to?

Kerina shot me a questioning look.
