I wasn't that scary, was I?

"They tried to escape," he said in a whisper. "They were pushed back."

My eyes widened. That must be what had Seth so pissed off.

"Are they okay?" I asked. My heart pounded in my chest like thunder. If anything bad happened to any of them before they could get away from here—

"They seem so," he replied. "Just thrown about somewhat."

"Thrown about," I echoed. "By a hemitheos?"

He looked confused. "I didn't see what it was. I couldn't see anything."

That confirmed it. "It's a power, like the witches have, only— different." I shook my head. "It's hard to explain.

"So the coup was conducted by witches?" His glance toward the door was more frightened than before.

"No, not witches. People that hate witches." I ran a hand over my hair. "It's complicated. The witches sent them here, to the Vault, because they're scared of them. Some can shift as well as using power."

"I see."

I wasn't sure he did see, but that was okay. This was a lot to take in. I still hadn't gotten my head around it.

"So, can you take me to see the Keeper?" I asked again when I realised he hadn't answered.

He took a step toward the door. "I don't think I can. If they see, it might anger them."

"Right." I put out a hand, but pulled it back, in case I seemed threatening. "I understand. I'll speak to Seth about it." I considered telling him Seth said it was all right, but I didn't. Baffor might believe me, but he also might get in trouble for it. It wasn't fair to risk an old man, even though I badly wanted to see the guys.

Baffor nodded quickly. "Yes. You should do that. I should go. They might wonder why I took so long to deliver your food."

"Yes, they might," I agreed. "But I'll try to make sure nothing bad happens. I'll tell them I was talking to you. They'll understand. I like to talk sometimes."

"Yes. Um." He stepped toward the door. "Excuse me, please."

"Of course." I waved him out and watched as he hurried away.

He was barely out the door before Seth entered. He couldn't have missed seeing Baffor, but he didn't seem concerned. Rather his eyes were on my nipples, which sat up visibly under the fabric of my singlet. He licked his lips and moved his gaze to my face right before I kneed him in the groin.

Okay, I was onlythinkingabout doing that.

"Viva. I trust you've rested well." He smiled warmly. Well, warm with a hint of creepy as fuck.

"Yes, I did, thank you." I turned to the tray, but kept half an eye on Seth. I lifted the cloche and snagged a piece of toast. "Did you want something?" I took a bite and smiled as I chewed. With my mouth closed, of course. I'm not a total heathen.

He looked annoyed. "I came to teach you how to shift. If the ability is in you."

I was glad I only took one bite of toast; it sat heavily in my stomach straight away.

"Oh," I said once I swallowed. "I would like that. Thank you."

He puffed out his chest. "Of course you would. Your education is sadly lacking. The witches should have sent you here earlier. The moment they knew what you were."

"As a kid?" I asked. The witches sucked, but I didn't think even they would send a child away like that.

"Yes, they've done that many times," he replied. "Including to myself."

"Oh." So much for thinking they weren't that bad. "That would have been difficult." No wonder he was fucked up. Gwendolyn too. Okay, her especially. Abandonment wasn't a great way to start life.
