"You seem more like the ones in the statues," I agreed.

Her eyes flashed when she cottoned on to my meaning. "Slut shaming is so ugly," she said.

I couldn't argue with that, it really was.

She wasn't done though. "If I fuck any man, it's to keep them close. You know what men are like, they so often think with their cocks and nothing else."

"So you're keeping Seth around for sex?" I asked. If he heard a word we'd said, he gave no sign. He was deep in conversation and agitation. Whatever the servant said had him ruffled.

"Some day they'll all come to find who is really in charge," she stated

"Girl power?" I said.

"Hemithea power," she said. "We are stronger than the males."

I wasn't sure if she meant to say that, but she couldn't take it back when she had.

"Good to know," I said. "How wide is the variety of strengths? I know I was more powerful than Helene."

For a moment I thought Gwendolyn might answer, but she pressed her lips together instead.

"Right, we're not friends." I sat back and crossed my legs. "I guess I'll have to ask Seth later."

She looked indifferent, but her eyes flickered toward him briefly. She knew he would tell me, but she couldn't bring herself to do it. And I thought I had trust issues.

Whatever, if that was how she wanted to play it, so be it.

Seth stepped away and stalked back to his seat.

"Is everything okay?" Gwendolyn asked smoothly. She even sounded like she cared. Maybe she did. She and Seth had been—whatever they were for each other— for a long time. It would be difficult not to care, at least a little bit. Their lives and fortunes were intertwined, even if they both thought the other would let them take control. That was their problem, I would stay well out of it if I could. Except maybe to play them off each other.

"Yes, just a small matter," Seth said.

I barely knew him, but I could tell he was lying.

"Is it about Dex?" I asked. "Is he okay?"

A muscle in the side of Seth's face twitched. So itwasabout Dex.

"He's fine," Seth said reluctantly. "He'll be ready to announce his resignation soon. He and the Alpha." He nodded toward Gwendolyn.

"Has it taken some convincing?" I asked. And by convincing I mean a beating, threats, and Hades only knew what else. My heart ached at the idea. If anyone hurt a hair on Dex's handsome head, I would rip them apart with my bare hands.

I pushed the anger down again. I couldn't rip anyone, not now, not yet.

"Should I talk to him?" I was ready to leap out of my chair, but Seth shook his head.

"He's aware of what needs to be done. The arrangements are taking time. Everything must be perfect. Anything less and all our work will be undone."

"Oh. Wouldn't want that." I crossed my arms.

"No, we wouldn't." Gwendolyn looked at me like she was trying to read my soul.

Good luck with that, I thought sarcastically. Right now my soul felt so black she'd only see a dark smudge.

"I know you care about the Keeper," Seth said.

"I care about Dex," I corrected firmly. "I don't care what his job is—was."
