It didn't take a genius to figure out what positions he wanted us in. He could dream, but that's as far as it would go with me. Gwendolyn could look after herself. She seemed more interested anyway. Besides, if she was busy with Seth, it would keep her from throwing herself at Bain again. In theory. I suspected she wouldn't sully herself with anyone from Dex's former regime. Or Devlin's.

"So, you wanted to talk?" I asked. "I don't want us to be enemies. Life would be easier for us both if—"

"I don't want us to be enemies either," she said. "But don't expect us to be friends. Seth and I have spent too many years planning this. We won't let it fall apart because ofyou. Iwon't let it fall apart. He thinks you're harmless. That you'll play along, spread your legs, and choke on his dick whenever he wants. I know where your loyalties really lie."

"With myself?" I suggested. I don't know where she got off suggesting I'd lie back and be Seth's fuck toy. I was happy to leave that to her, but it wasn't going to be my future.

"Yourself, Dex, Bain." She shrugged. "Seth might not see it, I do. You may well play along until the witches are dealt with, but what happens after that?"

That was a good question. I could see how she'd question my motives.

"I don't know," I admitted. "I suppose that depends on Seth and what comes of destroying the witches." Fuck, did I really mean that? Destroying them completely? My mother and siblings were witches, even if I had little reason to think of them too favourably.

If Seth was to be believed, my mother knew about the hemitheos too, and did nothing to help me or stop the Covener from sending me away into exile. Did she fully understand what I was? Did she know because she was one too, but by exiling me, she might turn suspicion from herself?

Maybe the witches could use a bit of destruction, but I needed some answers first.

Gwendolyn nodded. "You might be destroyed along with them." She seemed to like that idea. "You know Dex will try to stop you, if he can."

"Dex would try to stop me from destroying myself," I agreed. "If he has a say in it. He might not. I mean, right now he's in a cell. There's not a lot he can do from there, is there?" I smiled sweetly.

"I know Dex," she said coolly. "He will find a way if he can. Bain too."

"Not Devlin?" I asked, genuinely curious.

She hesitated and her eyes narrowed. "Devlin will try, but he has no influence here, not now. He spent too many years distancing himself from the Vault. Playing the mysterious but all powerful Alpha. Half the Residence doesn't even know who he is. He might claim to be Alpha, but they'll just think he's crazy."

"Did you plan that?" I asked.

She smiled slightly, looking smug. "It might have. It worked well, wouldn't you say?"

I was impressed and scared at the same time. "You really have been planning this for a long time. How long?"

"Since before Devlin and I married. Seth was disappointed I didn't marry him, but it was all about the long game."

"I would have gotten bored long before I followed through," I said. I doubted her claim that Seth wanted to marry her. If he really was Helene's brother, she wouldn't have accepted Gwendolyn as an equal, a replacement, or anything significant. Helene was nothing if not hungry for power in all its forms. She wanted to raise Comus in the mistaken hope he'd make her a god. No, I couldn't see her and Gwendolyn getting along at all.

"Of course you would," Gwendolyn agreed. "It takes determination, devotion, and persistence to carry out anything like this. You're the castoff of the witches who is now the Keeper's little pet."

"Hey." I scowled at the bitch. "There's no need to call me names. We're all castoffs from the witches, for one thing. For another, I'm no one's pet. Not now, not ever."

"Not even Helene's?" Gwendolyn asked. "From what I've heard, she had you on a short leash."

She wasn't wrong about that, unfortunately.

"I was a prisoner," I said firmly. "Not a pet. She just needed me to help her raise a god." I cocked my head at her. "I'm surprised she didn't want your help with that. You seem like the helpful type." If there was something in it for her, that was.

"Raising the Lord of the Dead?" Gwendolyn asked. "Lord of Lies. That's a stupid thing to do. What did they think would come of that?"

I glanced toward Seth. "Does he know?"

"That his sister is dead?" Gwendolyn asked. "Yes, he does. Careful, he might blame you for that."

"Thanks for the warning." I sighed. "But it wasn't my fault. Helene and Luther brought that on themselves. And Comus. You'd like him, he reminds me of you. Big dick, big ego, big plans." I should probably not be thinking about a god's dick right now. He made it clear he wanted me. By his side, underneath him, having his babies. He was as crazy as Helene.

Gwendolyn actually took my words as a compliment. I saw it in her eyes.

"I would make a better god than Helene," she declared.
