"Just do as you’re told and no one needs to get hurt," a voice said beside my ear.

"Fuck you," I snapped.

Something was jabbed into my ribs and the world exploded in a flood of pain.

Viva

When I awoke, the pain was gone, but my body was stiffer than a dick in a brothel. But much less fun.

The surface underneath me was hard. And moving. A car, or the back of a truck, if I had to guess.

We went over a bump. I was thrown against what felt like a metal wall.

I winced and rubbed my shoulder. Definitely a truck. One with fucking hard sides. Shame, if we were on the balloon I could take it down. Even if it meant going down with it.

I opened my eyes and blinked a few times. The back of the truck was dimly lit.

My eyes were dry and sore. I was tempted to close them again and hold on until we got wherever we were going. I didn't need to inhale deeply to know I wouldn't be able to draw power here.

They would have made sure of that.

Fuckers.

I could fight back in other ways, so falling back to sleep wasn't an option. Even if it sounded really, reallygood right now.

I groaned with the effort of sitting up. Whatever they did to me left my muscles aching and weakened.

There was nothing in the world I hated more than feeling vulnerable. I felt that now. I couldn't draw and my reflexes would be slower. And whoever was driving the truck was probably armed.

Motherfuckers.

"Bain?" I whispered into the shadows. "Someone?" I didn’t want to think he might be dead.

They all might be.

I always relied on myself, always.I could do it again if I had to.

I just—didn't want to have to. I'd gotten used to having Bain, Knox, and Dex around, even when they were exasperating. I owed all three of them my life. All for different reasons, and some more literally than others.

Bain's groan was the sweetest sound I've ever heard.

"Thank Hades," I whispered. "Bain, are you okay?"

He groaned again and sat up, a hand to his head. "Yeah. Feels like I took another hit to my brain, but nothing I can't handle."

I took a moment from that display of testosterone, then said, "I'd heal it, but something in here is dampening my ability."

I caught a hint of movement that might be a shrug.

"I'll be okay. You healed the worst of it. You shouldn't have though." He sounded as dry as I felt. What were the chances they’d stop and give us some water sometime soon?

"I'll let you die next time," I said sarcastically. "You're welcome, by the way."

He moved closer and caught my hand in his. "It weakened you. If you hadn't done it, you could have fought back."

My mouth moved, but I couldn't put the words together for a minute or two.
