“I know.”

She hummed for a moment and then turned to me. “I’m due to get my period in a week or so. Which means…” She tilted her head to the side, “I ovulated sometime in the last few days.”

“So the chance to get you pregnant is passed?”

She turned and sat between my thighs facing me. “I don’t know the exact moment I ovulated, and they say there’s like a seventy-two-hour window before and after ovulation for the egg to be fertilized. But yes, I’d guess I ovulated early last week based on when I’m due to get my period again, which would mean there’s no chance of getting pregnant now if I’m not already.”

I nodded and ran my finger over my lips in wonder. “When can you test?”

“Anxious?” She joked, raising her eyebrow at me in jest.

“Incredibly.” I answered honestly.

She tilted her head and got a dreamy look in her clear blue eyes and ran her hands up my arms. “I don’t know, I’ve never had to test before. I think they say it’s best to wait until your missed period, but some tests can tell a few days before that, but I think they’re less accurate.”

“Okay.” I let all of that process in my head as I tried to be patient. “I know it’s only been two weeks; I’ve just waited ten years for you and can’t help my anxiousness.”

“I know baby.” She said, crawling up onto my lap and laying her head on my shoulder. “I know exactly what you mean.”

“What exactly do you expect me to do with my day?” Cora huffed from the doorway as I walked out to the elevator the next morning. She leaned her shoulder against the door jamb wearing a sexy as hell silk nightgown in the same shade as her blue eyes. Her hair piled on top of her head, and she didn’t have a stich of makeup on.

She was positively breathtaking.

“I expect you to relax until the stylists get here for your hair and makeup trial run.” I said before pushing the elevator button.

“I want to work Mav. I thought that was your end goal anyway.” She replied, leaning up off the doorway and walked out to me. “Get me to quit Halo and work with you, building our empire.” She imitated my voice and I laughed at her and closed the last few feet of distance between us.

“That is my goal Cora, but we get married in two days, so my goal for right now is to make sure you have the most memorable experience possible up until that moment you walk down the aisle to me. Pamper yourself and relax, embrace the experience baby. You can come to work with me when we get back from the honeymoon.”

She scoffed and turned her cheek to me when I went to kiss her, “By then I’ll be pregnant, and you’ll lock me away in some macho man display of protectiveness.”

I smiled and turned her face to meet mine and kissed her, lingering, and letting my tongue sooth her bad attitude for a while before pulling back. “I promise Angel, you’ll be at my side soon enough.”

She pursed her lips but didn’t rebuke that, because she knew it was true, and I knew she was just being difficult about it because she didn’t know what to do with idle time anymore. But that was going to change soon because she was going to be my wife and she deserved to relax now that she didn’t have to fight to simply survive anymore.

“I love you.” I said softly, kissing her once more. “I’ll see you for dinner.”

“I love you too.” She replied as I walked into the waiting elevator and stared at her beauty until the last second when the door shut between us.

On the ride to work Franklin interrupted my normal email perusal. “Sir, there’s a… bit of chaos outside of Hawthorn Tower this morning.”

I put my phone down and looked at him in the mirror. “What do you mean?”

“A crowd of paparazzi has formed, waiting for you and Ms. Valentine. There’s a mix of fans in the crowd too.”

“Fans?”

“Yes sir.” He replied with a grimace, “A sort of Maverick and Cora fan club has formed. They have signs and everything.”

“Good lord.” I sighed and rubbed my forehead.

“Can I be frank with you sir?” Franklin asked uncharacteristically.

“Always.”

“I think you could use the positive interaction with people before the scandal breaks in an hour.”

Of course Franklin knew about Veronica’s bull shit, he knew everything.
