He flinches at this, but then reaches out to tilt my chin up toward him so that I’m forced to meet his gaze.

“I know it’s not enough, but it’s all we have, and I for one, plan to make the most of the time we have.”

“But—”

He bends, cutting me off with a kiss that melts the words from my tongue and has the remainder of my bagel slipping from my hand. Seven pulls away suddenly, stepping in front of me as the metal frame of the building groans loudly, and we watch in horror as it begins to tilt dangerously toward us.

Seven grabs my hand, dragging me back into the car before slipping into the driver’s seat and revving the engine to life. Throwing the car into reverse, he slams his foot down on the pedal. The tires screeching to life just as the building’s shadow begins to fall over us.

We race backward, our car against the falling building.

“Hang on,” Seven shouts, as he looks up and realizes we can’t outrun it. Throwing his body over me, we wait in terrified silence as the building crashes down around us.

Once the noise dies down, and we realize we’re still alive, Seven slowly sits back in his chair as he breathes a sigh of relief.

The building must have crumpled back in on itself, as it lies in ruins several feet in front of us, dust and debris settling all around us.

Seven slumps forward over the car wheel for a moment before turning to look at me.

“Are you alright?”

I nod my head, still in shock as I stare at the destruction.

“Do you think they’re dead?”

He doesn’t answer for a long moment.

“No, not yet, but I’ll go check. Stay here, Evi.”

My heart leaps into my throat, my protest dying on my lips as I watch him disappear into the smoke.

I can’t stay here. I have to help.

Throwing open my car door, I run headlong into the rubble …

There’s such a thing as instant regret.

My lungs fill with smoke, my eyes burning so badly I can hardly see as I climb over dangerous shards of glass and bent metal, among other things.

I open my mouth to call out, but all I can do is cough.

I know I should head back to the car, but I’m not even sure which direction it’s in anymore. All I can do is press onward.

Covering my mouth and nose with a bit of fabric from my dress, I continue on through the rubble.

Why did I think this was a good idea? How am I supposed to help anyway?

If anything, I’ve just made the whole rescue mission that much more dangerous and complicated.

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Left.

I freeze, blinking ash from my eyes.

No, impossible.

I continue forward.
