“It seems logical, given that there are other supernatural things in this world. I mean, even you hear the voices of the dead.”

I open my mouth to correct him before realizing he’s teasing me.

“I guess it’s not that far-fetched.”

“It’s better than the opposite.”

“Which is?”

“Finding out there is and not being able to get there.”

I can’t say I’d really thought about this before, but it can’t say that it doesn’t make sense. I think I’m starting to understand what Luci’s been so afraid of.

The bond. I can’t even begin to imagine how devastating it would be to lose one of them now.

“So, how do we break the curse?” I ask.

“Why?” Seven asks, leaning against the front of the car as he grins down at me and tilts his head to one side. “Do youreallywant me following you into the afterlife?”

I know he’s teasing, but I can’t help wanting exactly that.

“Yes. I don’t want to lose you,” I say. “I don’t want to hurt you when I die …”

Seven’s grin remains plastered on his face, but I can feel the agony thinly veiled behind his eyes.

“Evi,” Seven says quietly, “it’s impossible for you to help us with that now.”

“What?”

Seven looks away, his jaw working as he thinks of what to say.

“First, let me start by saying that none of us chose these requirements,” Seven says. “For us, our mate has to meet a very specific set of rules to be our curse breaker. She must be newly eighteen, a virgin—"

“I am … I was both those things,” I say quickly.

“And,” Seven continues, his voice breaking slightly as he looks down at me, “she has to willingly sacrifice our future child to save us.”

“Oh,” I breath, my heart sinking in my chest. “And Anna wasn’t those things?”

“She was, up until she asked Valentine to turn her.”

“What?”

“She couldn’t bear the thought of dying. It terrified her, and even more so when she realized she was with child.”

“If she was turned, then why …”

“Why is she dead?” he finishes for me. “You can’t turn a pregnant woman. The venom turns the baby, stagnating its development as it slowly and agonizingly drains the mother of her life. Valentine didn’t tell her this, and I don’t think he was even aware that she was pregnant until it was too late. By the time Luci realized what was happening, she was already too far gone to save, and he chose to put her out of her misery instead.”

“Wait, Luci’s the one who ended her life?”

“Yes, but she was already dying. There was no way to save her, Evi.”

“Oh.”

“Look,” Seven says, putting an arm around my shoulders as he pulls me to him, “I know it’s not easy, but at least we have the rest of our lives to spend with each other.”

“The rest ofmylife you mean.”
