“Nothing,” I say, my mouth dry as I my heart continues to race. “It was just a nightmare.”

“Do you want to talk about it?”

“No, I’m okay,” I answer before turning to look at him. “Where’s Luci?”

“If he’s smart—"

“If he’ssmart, he’ll be long gone by now,” interrupts Seven’s voice from the other side as I turn to look at him, his hands behind his head as he leans back on his pillow.

“Seven.”

“What, it’s true? If he’s smart, he would have left to protect Evi before he goes feral.”

“I think he’s in trouble,” I say softly.

“What are you talking about?”

I look down at the blankets, worrying a bit of the fabric between my fingers.

“It was just a nightmare,” Dante says.

“I-I’ve heard her voice before,” I mutter, and I feel Dante’s hand stiffen on my back. “After the blood transfusion. She’s told me things.”

“So, she’s still talking to you.”

I blink up at Dante, surprised by hislackof surprise.

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“I wasn’t sure before,” he sighs, “but I think she’s stuck with you because she needs you to finish something for her.”

“You mean like a ghost?”

“Sort of, though with blood it’s more like an echo.”

“Fuck,” Seven groans, flopping back against the pillows. “I was hoping we could spend the day in bed instead of out hunting down feral vampires.”

“Come on,” Dante says, throwing the blankets off as gets to his feet. “I think we know exactly where we’ll find him. We need to go before it’s too late. Besides, I’m pretty sure Evi could do with a bit to eatbeforewe plan to keep her in bed all day.”

“She’s more than welcome to eat my—”
