“I do,” Dante sighs deeply, shaking his head as he starts walking again.

“Wait, where are you taking me?”

“To bed.”

“Again? Already?”

Seven chuckles at this.

“No, love, to sleep.”

Nestling against Dante’s chest, I feel my peace wash over me, and I allow myself to drift away with it.

Evelyn

Icough, the smoke burning my lungs and eyes as I step further into the burnt wreckage of the building.

“Lucien?” I call out, the haze making it impossible to see more than a few feet in front of me as I turn in a circle. My heart beats hard in my chest as eerie blue light creeps in all around me, accompanied by the clink of metal. “Lucien, where are you?”

Nothing.

I push onward, the ash beneath my feet growing deeper with each step, and my chest tightening in fear. The smoke thickens, choking me just as everything suddenly turns frigid around me.

“Lucien, please! Answer me!”

Again, nothing.

I struggle to move forward, the ash and debris nearly up to my waist. I’m just about to give up on my search when the smoke slowly clears to reveal a burnt and broken body … a stake through his heart.

Luci.

“No!” I scream, crumpling to my knees as sobs rack my body.

Go to him, Evelyn. Go to my Lucien. He needs you.

I blink away the tears as I glance around me, searching for the source of the voice.

“Anna?”

Save him, Evelyn. Save him from himself. Please. Before it’s too late.

Scrambling to my feet, I race forward, pushing my way through the ash toward Luci’s body.

Drawing near, I reach out for him, my fingertips missing him by inches just as I’m suddenly dragged beneath the ash.

Down ...

Down ...

Down into the suffocating darkness.

I jolt up in bed, my chest heaving as I stare out across the room, cool early morning light filtering in through the large windows.

“What’s wrong, love?”

I jump, startled to find I’m not alone in bed as Dante moves to sit up next to me and places a comforting hand on my back.
