“And it’ll be impossible for us to kill him until your blood has burned out of his system,” I add.

Evi looks at each of us in turn before her eyes settle on Valentine, and my heart sinks. I can’t blame her for wanting immortality when the other option is death and sterilization.

Suddenly, Evi reaches under the couch and pulls out the heel from the first night she met Dante in the club. She palms it in her hand for a moment before lifting her eyes to meet Valentine’s.

“I choose, Dante,” she says before chucking the shoe at Valentine as hard as she can.

It’s the only sign I need to know what to do next. I step back from Valentine and, giving him the toothiest grin that I can manage, I shove my own blade deep into his heart.

I savor the way his breath catches, his hatred for me only rivaled by my own as I lean in.

“Fuck. You,” I breathe against his ear, my adrenaline kicking into overdrive. “I told you not to fucking touch her.”

With that, I lean back and kick him as hard as I can in the chest. The glass behind him shattering as he falls backward through the window to his death far below.

Ifeel the instant Valentine’s life is snuffed out, the choker around my neck crumbling to ash around me.

The relief is so great that I nearly let go of my own in the same breath.

“Stay with me,” Dante orders, his deep voice rolling over me as it draws me back from the edge. His strong hands are gentle as they lift me off the floor and onto the lounge, and I can feel Seven and Luci hovering worriedly around me.

“This is going to hurt,” Dante says, leaning over me to tenderly brush my hair aside.

“Though not as much as your death would hurt us,” Seven says, his voice surprisingly taut, and I give him a weak smile.

The next thing I know, Dante’s lips brush lightly over my neck. I feel the soft flutter of butterflies in my stomach just before they’re chased away by agonizing pain as his fangs sink into me and something rushes in to fill my veins.

I cry out, only for the sound to die in my ears as I feel the sting of yet another bite just before the pain turns to warmth and pleasure.

My eyes flutter open, a new hunger awakened in me as I realize Seven is bent over the back of the couch, my wrist raised to his mouth, gold liquid dripping from his lips as he fills me with him. A soft moan escapes me, as an ache begins to build within my body, and I’m suddenly aware of Dante’s lips moving over my skin as he presses soft kisses to my neck and shoulder.

My heart races as he works his way up behind my ear before pulling away.

“Did my father do this to you?” Dante asks, his finger lightly grazing over the cigarette burn.

“Yes,” I answer, looking up into those sparkling blue of his eyes as a growl reverberates through his chest, “but he’s gone now.”

“Yes. Never again, love,” Dante says softly, dropping to press his lips to the burn. “Never again will I let anyone hurt you.”

“I’d like to see someone try,” Seven sneers. “It would be last thing they ever do.”

“How can you be so sure about that?” I ask, my eyes searching their faces.

“About what?”

“That no one will hurt me again.”

Dante leans back.

“Because my father is finally dead. No one holds any power over us now … except you,” he glances down at the floor before bending to pick something up. Straightening, he holds a black envelope up in the air. “And I’d like to offer you a new deal.”

“What?”

“Let us love you, Evi,” he says. “For the rest your life, let us worship you, and only you. Let us spend our whole lives together making up for everything we’ve put you through. You’ll want for nothing; this I vow to you.”
