“The fuck we do.”

“Seven,” Dante growls as he pinches the bridge of his nose.

“What’s there to think about?” I scoff, glancing between everyone.

“Valentine’s the only one who can turn her,” Luci answers quietly.

Shit. How could I have forgotten?

“But if he turns her—"

“I know,” Dante says, cutting me off, “but we have to let her choose.”

Valentine’s grin widens, and it takes everything in me not to smash his head through the window.

“Evi,” Luci says gently, “we need you to listen carefully.”

“What is it?” she asks, her voice growing fainter.

“Can we ask her before she dies, please?” I growl.

Dante shoots me a piercing look before taking Evi’s hand in his.

“Love, you need to make a choice. You’re going to die unless Valentine or I bite you.”

“What? Then of course, I choose you.”

“Hear me out, love, please,” Dante says with a sigh. “If you ask me to bite you, it’ll save your life, but you’ll never be able to turn. You’ll always be mortal. Only Valentine can give you immortality.”

Evi considers this for a moment before she starts to open her mouth.

“Dante also failed to mention,” Luci adds, “that either way you will become sterile.”

I look away in frustration, my jaw tight as I shake my head.

The choice is obvious.

Who wouldn’t choose immortality when the price to be paid is the same?

Everything leading up to this moment has been for nothing. She’ll choose Valentine, and then we’ll be back to square one.

“What aren’t you telling me?” Evi asks.

“What?”

“Seven,” she breathes, “I can tell by his expression that you’re not telling me something.”

Dante sighs deeply.

“Yes, but that’s only because I didn’t want us to influence your decision.”

“Tell me.”

“Don’t you dare—”

I slam a hand over Valentine’s mouth before he can finish his threat.

“If you ask Valentine to turn you, he won’t die from the blade you stabbed him with.”
