Luci lifts me into his arms and bounds up the stairs as easily as if I weighed nothing at all.

“How the hell did you even find me?”

“Well, that’s part of why I’m half-naked,” I laugh as Luci gives me a curious look. “I used the lacings from my corset and all of Valentine’s shoelaces to keep me from getting lost. At least, that was the idea until I ran out of string.”

“I suppose that’s one good thing about being a vampire,” Luci says as he carries me through the maze of halls, “the heightened senses … plus echolocation.”

“What?”

He smirks as he begins humming a tune as we walk. In no time at all, we’ve reached my poor little string, and without a single wrong turn.

“Why didn’t you use that before?” I ask.

“When?”

“In Valentine’s crystal wardrobe room. When you were trying to hunt me down.”

Luci’s brow furrows as he glances down at me before quickly focusing his gaze forward.

“I don’t know, Evi. Honestly, I don’t even remember. There are huge black holes in my memory right now. I think you came face to face with my monster and lived to tell the tale.”

“Oh,” I say, a shiver working its way down my spine alongside a strange mixture of relief.

If he’s telling the truth, if what I’d experienced then was the monster within, then perhaps he really can be saved. Exiting the maze, Luci makes his way toward the main lobby, and I’m surprised when we find it completely empty.

“Damn,” Luci mutters, looking around the huge empty space. “You’re right, Valentine definitely means business.”

Turning away from the main doors, Luci walks toward the stairs leading up toward Valentine’s office, and my body tenses. As we step onto the upper landing, we’re met with the startled faces of the only two people who seem to be left in the entire building.

“Sorry, darling, I’ll be just a moment,” Luci says, setting me down on the floor as he moves toward them.

“What the hel—”

The guard doesn’t have a chance to finish his sentence before the end of one of the heavy chains still hanging from Luci’s wrists slams into him, sending him sprawling across the floor. The other guard immediately leaps into action, only to be met with the same fate as Luci strikes him with the other chain.

The first guard, rubs his jaw in a daze as he pulls himself back to his feet and lunges at Luci. His fist manages to connect with Luci’s jaw, but Luci just shakes it off with a grin before his own fist slams into the center of the man’s chest.

No,throughthe middle of the man’s chest.

I have to look away before the scene makes me sick as the man gasps and splutters before crashing to the floor. I peek up at Luci as the other guard jumps on him from behind, trying to choke him out.

Luci reaches up over his shoulder, grabbing the man by the back of his jacket before yanking him forward and slamming him against the floor. Kneeling down over the man’s chest, Luci grabs both sides of his head before expertly snapping his neck.

He takes a moment to re-center himself before turning to look back at me.

“Alright, let’s get dressed.”

Removing the shirt and pants from the man he’s leaning over, he hands the first to me. I quickly slip it on, grateful to finally be covered, as Luci struggles and fails to get the pants on.

“I don’t think those are ever going to fit you,” I say as Luci tries yet again to yank them up over his thighs, and only ends up tearing them.

“I believe you’re right,” he says, bending to rip them off. I quickly look away as I’m given a full view and my cheeks burn with heat. “Hopefully, Valentine has something for me in his office.”

“The evidence is in there, too!” I say, scrambling to my feet and immediately regretting it as the blood rushes from my head and I stumble back.
