“What?”

“He wasn’t there to turn you, Seven. He was there to kill you.”

“Wait, what are you talking about,” I ask, stopping in my tracks as my eyes narrow on him. “The fire? That was you?”

“Yes, though Luci’s the one who actually set the fire. He’s always been better at arson than me,” Dante snorts. “Come to think of it, I should have realized sooner that the mansion was probably his doing, too.”

I watch him closely, my mind trying to process everything he’s telling me.

“Why would your father think any of that would bother me?”

“Because he doesn’t know you like I do,” Dante says.

“What does that have to do with anything?”

“My father deals in power. You know that as well as I do.”

“So?”

“So, even when you were human, my father saw you as a threat,” Dante says. “Why else do you think you’re the only man he’s ever had pleasure him? That his favorite past time was torturing you with his touch?” My stomach clenches sickeningly at the reminder. “Seven, my father has no interest in men, and he knew you didn’t either. It was the only way he could bring you to your knees.”

“You should have let him kill me.”

“Don’t you see?”

“See what? That you’re the reason I have to spend the rest of my life like this?!”

“No, that you’re the only one who actually stands a chance against him. I need you on my side, Seven. The world needs you.” Dante says. “Evi needs you. She needs us.”

“Why should I trust you?”

“Because, I love Evi, and I know you do, too.” Dante says. “I’ll do anything, anythingto keep her alive. Even if it ruins our chances of breaking the curse with her.”

My brow furrows at this.

“Wait, what are you talking about?”

“I didn’t destroy the diary. I brought it with me tonight. Evi has it now, and soon, she should know everything.”

I stare at him in open-mouthed shock.

“But Luci …”

“I know.”

I look down at the knives in my hand for a long moment before glancing back up at Dante.

“Alright, let’s bring the bastard down once and for all.”

“I was hoping you’d say that,” Dante says.

“So, what’s the plan?”

“As soon as he realizes Evi has the diary, he’s going to come for me. He needs to find me in my office, and you can’t be a threat to that,” he answers just before his brass-knuckled fist slams into the side of my head.

“What the fu—”

I drop to my knees, the words dying on my tongue as my eyes roll back in my head.
