“Because—” he said. “Because I don’t care if you are her or you aren’t. All I care about is the fact that I’ve fallen in love with you.”
Mina’s eyes went wide. “But what if I’m not her? What if you find her one day?”
“Then I find her.” He shrugged. “And we deal with it all then. I don’t know how I would feel if that happened, but it has been seven hundred years, and I am done waiting for her. I’ve moved on. Mina, I loveyou.”
“But what if—”
He grabbed her by the shoulders and pulled her around to face him again, massaging her bare arms with his fingers. “It doesn’t matter. We can find out if you want to know for sure, but Mina, I know that I love you. I love your spirit, your fire, your smile, the taste of your skin, and the way you are with my people. You’ve filled every dark corner of my mind with blinding light. For so long I couldn’t feel a damn thing, and you brought me back to life. So yes, I’m sure it will be shocking if you’re not Evangeline, it’ll be shocking even if you are, but right now, all that matters is howyoufeel aboutme. Past be damned.”
She pressed her lips into a thin line and closed her eyes. He could hear her heart racing. “I…I do. I love you too.”
Erik smiled, and he leaned in kissing her hard, wrapping his arms around her in a crushing embrace. His fingers slipped into her hair, loosening the pins holding it in place.
“Erik,” she moaned, melting in his grasp.
“Do you trust me?” He asked, smiling wide.
Mina laughed. “I love you.”
“Then wrap your arms around me and hold on as tight as you can,” he said. “There’s one gift of mine I haven’t shown you yet.”
“What?” She frowned, circling her arms around his waist. “What do you mean?”
Erik’s grin turned wicked, and he rolled his shoulders back letting the magic in his blood take over, letting his body shift into the shape he desired.
Mina’s eyes went wide as the shadows of his wings blocked the light of the moon.
Her jaw dropped. “You have wings?”
“Sometimes.” He chuckled, and then caging her against his body once more, he flexed his shoulders and they shot into the sky, flying high over the garden.
Mina yelped, crushing her face into his shoulder, holding on with all her might.
He laughed, dropping a kiss on the top of her head. “You’re safe with me, Starlight. Always and forever.”
