Drifting onto a branch at the center of the tree he saw her watching a fight beneath her on the ground. He brushed his ghostly fingers over her cheek, and she faded into unconsciousness, her spirit drifting from her body like his.

Mina’s eyes scanned her surroundings and then settled on him. The smile that stretched across her face made his heart thump hard against his ribs.

“It’s you,” she whispered, reaching for him.

“Evangeline?” He gasped, grabbing her outstretched fingers, pulling her close. “Is it you?”

Mina shook her head. “I do not know, but I know you. My heart…it knows you.”

Her face twisted in pain, and she began to pull from his embrace. His breath caught in his throat. “Don’t please. Don’t leave me.”

“What if I’m not her?” She whispered.

“I...I…” Words failed him. What would he do if she wasn’t Evangeline? She looked so much like his long-lost love. Could he forsake her to follow the feelings growing deep inside him for Mina? “I don’t…My heart knows you too, Starlight. It wants you. I wantyou.”

She leaned into his embrace again, and as their lips met the spell snapped. His eyes opened and once more he was on the mattress in the witch’s room. Looking to his left and right he saw the three had withdrawn to wherever they slept, and Andrea stood over him, her eyes glowing with a faint white light.

“Your fate is close, My King. I can no longer answer the question you carry. She must answer it for you,” Andrea said. “The magic in your curse demands it.”

Erik shot to his feet, grabbed her by the neck, turned, and slammed her down onto the mattress beneath him. “You promised me answers. Are you saying you cannot deliver?”

Andrea glared at him. “I’m saying that the answer you seek is within your grasp.”

Erik growled in frustration and got back to his feet sweeping from the room. If the witch couldn’t give him the answers he wanted, then he’d find them himself.

Marching down the halls in the direction of his council room, he felt his skin tingling. He hadn’t drunk so deeply in weeks. He felt stronger and faster than ever. He needed to burn the energy before he came face to face with Mina again, or she’d never get the chance to ask him her questions. He turned at the council room and then marched down the side staircase into the courtyard just outside.

“Alaric!” He bellowed. “Alaric!”

The werewolf appeared at the top of the steps he’d exited from half a minute later, breathing heavily, his sword drawn.

“My King, what’s wrong?” He exhaled.

Erik shrugged out of his jacket and tore his shirt off over his head. “Spar with me.”

“Spar…with you here? Now?” The wolf shook his head and sheathed his sword once more, joining the king on the ground.

“Do you have more important things to do?” Erik asked, shaking out his arms.

Alaric shook his head slowly. “No, Your Majesty. Not at all. I just wanted to be sure I understood your request.”

“Don’t hold back,” he warned, watching as the man dropped his sword belt and shirt to the side. His muscles were twice the size of Erik’s, but where the werewolf had strength, as a vampire, he had the speed advantage.

Alaric lifted his fists and smiled. “Am I am at your service, My King.”
