“He knew?” Mina blinked at her in shock. “How?”

Lucy opened her mouth to respond, but the door opened again before she could and the king stepped inside.

“It’s what any good father would do, but as to your question, about your friend. As far as I’m aware, she’s still alive. My men and I never went back to the amphitheater,” he said, and then cleared his throat. “I’m sorry for overhearing, I just wanted to check on you.”

Mina hesitated and Lucy answered for her as she rose. “She is just fine. Give us one minute, and she’ll join you promptly in the throne room.”

Vlad smiled at her and rolled his eyes before turning back to Mina. “If you’re not feeling up to this then the council can wait. If you’d rather sleep—”

“No.” She croaked, shaking her head. She was a princess. She was better than this. “I’ll be out in a second.”

He watched her get to her feet and then looked at Lucy. “Bring her into the throne room when she’s ready.”

“Of course.” Lucy gave him a small nod and took Mina’s arm pulling her close, supporting her weight. They waited for Vlad to walk back out of the room, and then she tugged Mina around in front of her to size up what clothes needed changing.

“I can do this, right?” Mina asked, her body still feeling like it might break if she bumped into something the wrong way.

“Of course,” Lucy said. “We’re women of Dee. If we can’t do this, then no one can.”

“The Crone only knows what state I’d be in if you weren’t here, Cousin.” Mina threw her arms around Lucy’s neck and squeezed her tight. “Thank you.”
