“You only want it because you think everything will be over tomorrow. I want it because I need you. There’s a big difference.”

“So what you’re saying is I can come over?” I squeak.

He huffs in frustration. “You know exactly what I’m saying.”

I nod as though he can see me through the phone. “Okay. I’ll stay. But know that if my ovaries fall out, it’s all your fault.”

His laughter fills the other end of the line, and because I don’t find it amusing, I hang up on him.

The gift Dean sent is waiting for me on the bed. He’s right, it’s nothing big.

I tear into the box and pull out a skeleton key.

“What’s with key presents?” I ask the room. “What the heck is it for?” It’s not made of gold or silver. It’s not a pendant or a charm. It in fact is just a key.

“Looks like he’s just as awful at giving gifts as you are,” Sheridan notes.

“Mm.” I roll the key in my hand, wondering what it could mean. Is it the key to his heart? Does he mean he’s going to lose the challenge on purpose?

That last possibility has me throwing the key on the nightstand. I refuse to play that way. Why does everyone around me feel they need to help me get something? Or somewhere.
