“It’s your little girlfriend.” It was just a whisper, those words. And they burned through me the way the fire had blazed through my childhood home, taking everything I knew and loved away from me in an instant.

“She’s gotten to you, hasn’t she? Telling you all those lies. Telling you that you don’t need me. That she loves you.”

His scoff hurt worse than the things he said.

“How can she possibly love you the way I do? How can she love you when she doesn’t know who you really are?”

“No!” I grabbed my hair and yanked, almost as hard as John had earlier. “No, that’s not true.”

“How can she tell you she loves you when she’s fucking that other guy?”

“No!” I bucked my hips, trying to throw my brother off me. But he’d always been stronger than me. From the first night he’d crawled into my bed, he’d always been able to overpower me.

“And you couldn’t even kill him. How pathetic is that?”

Tears drained from my eyes and coated my cheeks, and snot slicked across my face as I tried to wipe them away.

“You couldn’t even kill him,” John repeated, and the disappointment in his voice was enough to make me wish I was dead.

“You’re going to bring her to me. You’re going to bring me your little girlfriend, and I’m going to show her how a real man fucks. And I’ll tell you what. I’ll even let you watch, so you can see how it’s supposed to be done.”

My entire body shook, my mind already trying to shut my brother’s words out of my head. But it was too late. It always was. My brother always got what he wanted.

“But first, I’m going to let you have a little fun with Peter, here, alright? Just you and me and Peter.”

Though John lifted himself off me, the weight on my chest didn’t lessen.

“Get up.” He jabbed my side with the tip of his boot. “Get yourself cleaned up. You’re a disgrace.”

I did as he said, wiping my eyes and cleaning my face. When the remnants of my shame were cleared away, I turned to where he sat on the couch.

“Bring your friend over here.”

Again, I did as he said, laying Peter’s naked body on the couch and adjusting his head so he could watch with his wide-open eyes.

“Clothes off, brother,” John said, patting his outstretched legs. “You know the drill.”

Hanging my head, I did as he said. His eyes flared as I bared myself to him, and my mind slipped farther and farther away.

Away, to thoughts of Mysti. To thoughts of defying my brother once again. As John pulled me toward him, I knew I could never let him have her.

For once, I’d fight back. I’d prove to John I wasn’t what he thought I was.

Mysti was mine. I loved her and she loved me.

For her, I’d fight back.
