“I didn’t hear anything they said,” he added. “I was already too far away and I couldn’t get close again without them seeing me.”

“It’s okay, Darrio. They’re a problem for another day.” I shot him what I hoped was a convincing smile, then turned my attention to Remy. Unfortunately, that situation would have to wait. Between the new information I’d uncovered earlier and whatever Day was planning, Heath and Illyria didn’t pose the most immediate concern. “I hope your end of things wasn’t as exciting.”

“I got held up by Brodgan. He came out earlier than expected, so I had to distract him to make sure he wouldn’t get back to you guys before you were finished in his office.”

Even though he was safely in front of me, my palms went clammy. “How did you distract him?”

“I stuck to the plan and told him I’d been having trouble again and asked him for some advice. He seemed anxious to leave, but he stopped to talk to me.”

“Do you think he knew someone had been in his office?”

“There is no way to know. Unless he has security cameras in there, I don’t see how he could.”

“Are we forgetting that he is a counselor at a school for gods?” Darrio rolled his eyes. “We have no idea what he’s capable of, and we’d be stupid to forget that.”

“He has a point. We should dig into his ability so we are better prepared to deal with him.”

“What exactly is his ability?” No one had told me when we arrived, and discussing the powers of the administrators seemed to be taboo.

“He doesn’t talk about it. From what I can gather, it’s something minor. I’ve never seen an outward display from him, and I haven’t felt anything substantial when we had sessions together.” If Remy didn’t know what Brodgan’s power was, I doubted anyone would. He’d been here long enough that if it was something Brodgan demonstrated, he would have seen it long before now.

There was no point in dwelling on that at the moment. The priority at the moment was finding Varon. Uneasiness in the pit of my gut was growing stronger, and I needed to assure myself that everything was okay.

Besides, it’s not like any of this was going to change in the time it took to find him.

“Let’s go find Varon.”

“Where should we look first?” Sam seemed at a total loss for how to proceed, blinded to reason by his worry for his friend. I laced my fingers with his.

“We’ll go down toward the classrooms and see if we can find him.”

“Red, we need to go by your room first.”

“We do? Why?”

“Do you really want to walk around the entire school trying to hold those giant sweats up? We need to get you some of your own clothes.”

He had a good point. It looked like I would need to keep deodorant, conditioner, and extra clothes in each of their rooms. Or we could make things easy and all of us move into one huge room.

The mental image of a giant bed with me in the middle and two naked men on either side did things to my body I didn’t have time to explore just then. Besides, I doubted it was even an option. I hopped off Sam’s bed and headed for the door. “Let’s go. The sooner I’m dressed, the sooner we find him.”

It didn’t take us long to make a pit stop at my bedroom, and once I was dressed in some leggings and a hoodie, we were back in the hallway. Rather than return the way we had come, Darrio steered us toward the back entrance to the residence area. The furthest stairwell would let us out on the far side of the hall of classrooms.

“No point in backtracking, we already saw he wasn’t there.”

On the main floor, we combed the abandoned hallways, students long since heading to their rooms or preferred hangout spots. With every now darkened corridor we found empty, my stomach dropped another inch.

It was somewhere around my knees when a shadow of movement up ahead caught my attention. It was heading right for us. My pulse picked up when I saw just how big it was, and the bubble of tension shattered when I saw a familiar body step out of the darkness.

Without a second thought, I dashed forward and leapt for Varon. I wrapped my arms around his neck and buried my face against him. I breathed deeply, drawing his scent into my lungs and exhaling relief. When I released him, I stepped back and smacked him on the arm.

“What the hell? Where did you go? We were worried when you up and disappeared!”

As I studied his face, it slowly sank in that something wasn’t right. Everything about his expression was tight and cold. So very unlike the last look I’d seen on his face in bed.

Ice filled my veins.

“What is it? Did something happen?”
