I snapped the frustratingly useless file shut. When he mentioned my parents in one of our sessions, his gaze had absolutely flicked in this direction. I had been so sure he had the information in one of these drawers.

But now, after risking all five of us, I had come up empty.

Unfortunately, there was no time for me to wallow in my failure. I changed my mind about opening Remy’s folder. First, it would contain information that was far too personal. What he said to Brodgan during their private sessions was for them alone. Second, it was probably very similar to mine and contained no information on his parentage.

Perhaps there would be another way to find out who his mother was. I was going to have to keep searching for my own information anyway, so why not his at the same time?

I returned the files to the drawer, careful to place them in their original spots. Then I returned to the desk and placed the key inside. I was about to rush back to the door when a small leather-bound journal caught my attention.

Don’t waste your time, Thea. There is nothing in there that you need to know.

I had never seen Brodgan write in that journal, but now that I noticed it, I realized it was on his desk every time I’d come into his office for a session.

Knowing I was already wasting too much time, I quit waffling and grabbed it, rapidly scanning pages. Nothing jumped out at first, and I was about to give up when something finally caught my eye.

Persephone came to mind again today. It has been many years, but seeing her creation right in front of me makes it impossible to ignore the memories. There’s no question, despite the difference in appearance. Her spirit is where I see it most, and it manifests in her bright red hair. The fire cannot be contained, so I suppose it had to come out some way. I see her father there, too. A child of Hades in my presence every day, how can it not remind me of everything that occurred?

Thea is not like them, though. At least not yet. She still has the potential to be a force for good, especially with her ability. As long as I or someone like me is willing to steer her down the right path, she’ll never become another monster.

I couldn’t breathe. My throat closed up and my hands shook violently. The journal dropped from my limp fingers and hit the desk with a soft thud. I couldn’t believe it.

I had found it.

I had found the truth, and now I had no fucking idea how to comprehend it.

I couldn’t dwell though. I had to get the hell out of there. I stumbled toward the door, my shock and confusion screwing with my equilibrium.

Sam and Varon both looked down as soon as I pulled the door open. I clicked it shut behind me, but before either of them could ask me a question, I shook my head.

“Let’s go.”

“Is everything–”

“Not yet. We have to go.”

“Alright, Killer, come on.”

They hustled me down the hall, but when we reached the residence landing, they steered me toward their bedroom instead of my own. I didn’t argue, since that was guaranteed privacy. If we went to mine, River might be there, and I wasn’t about to ask her to leave. I’d tell her eventually, but I still had to get my own head wrapped around it first.

When they got me into their room and shut the door behind them, I just stood there dazed.

“I’m trying to be considerate here, Puff, but if you don’t start talking, I’m going to freak out.”

“Agreed. What did you find?”

I didn’t know how to come out and say it. I was still processing, trying to make sure I had understood Brodgan’s journal entry correctly.

I knew I had. There was no mistaking it.

We were all the children of lesser gods. That’s what they told us when we got here. That’s what they had told us every time since. And yet, Brodgan had written in his journal that I was the daughter of Persephone and Hades.

Two of the Big Twelve.

How was that even possible?

“Start talking, or I’m going to find Brodgan.” There was a darkness I didn’t recognize in Sam’s voice, and I realized just how afraid he was. He was worried I had learned something terrible, and I wasn’t sure that he was wrong.

“I found it. I found out who they are. It was in his journal.”
