Chapter Twenty

‘You okay?’ I asked Lorenzo as he checked his phone for what seemed like the hundredth time in the last ten minutes.

‘Sì. I am just waiting for a… an important call.’

We’d already spoken to Marta first thing in the morning to check in on Leo, so it couldn’t be that.

‘Oh, okay. Is it to do with today?’ I cocked my head to the side, hoping he’d give me a clue about where we were going.

‘Sì…’ He grinned.

Hmm.I wracked my brains, trying to think. We’d been on a tour of the city, he knew I didn’t really fancy going to museums, so what else could we be doing? It was another sunny day, so maybe we’d go for a walk through Boboli Gardens. That would be nice. As it was almost half eleven, lunchtime wasn’t too far away, so perhaps he’d arranged a picnic and was waiting for a call from one of the chefs at the restaurant to say the food was ready to collect. The mind boggled.

On second thoughts, did it really matter that I didn’t know what we’d be doing? Rather than thinking about what the plan for the day was, I decided it would be nice to just go with the flow for a change. Let Lorenzo take the reins and just allow myself to be surprised.Yes.

Whilst I was waiting, I could send a few photos to my family, Roxy and Bella and tell them about our brilliant day yesterday. What a luxury.I couldn’t even remember the last time I had time to sit down and message them all properly, without having to worry about Leo or work. Sometimes being able to do the simplest things meant so much. This taking time out thing was a good idea.

First I’d reply to Holly’s text. She’d messaged yesterday about Umberto, texting me excitedly in the morning as Umberto had said she could finally come round to his house that evening, but then he’d cancelled at the last minute. Holly asked if I thought she should be worried that he hadn’t introduced her to any of his friends or family since she’d arrived.

Um, yes.

I was always a bit concerned that whenever they met, all they ever did was eat pizza in the car and then drive somewhere to have sex. At first I’d thought because Holly was young, maybe she didn’t want something serious, but seeing as she’d left uni to be with him, that didn’t ring true. Alarm bells were definitely going off in my head. Pretty sure Holly wouldn’t have moved to another country if she knew she was only going to see Umberto for a bit of back-seat nookie. I quickly typed out a message.

Me

Sorry for the delayed reply. Full on (fun!) itinerary with Lorenzo in Florence.

I say trust your gut. You moving to Italy to be with him was a big deal and showed a lot of commitment. That you were serious about the relationship, so have a think about what Umberto has done/is doing to show he feels the same way…

I know Holly would have split my one text message into fifty short ones, buthey. I was old-school. Hopefully that’d give her some food for thought…

Now time to send some pics.

Lorenzo jumped up and went into the bathroom. Just as I’d selected the photos to send, there was a knock at the door.

‘Can you get that, please, amore?’ he shouted.

‘Sure.’ Probably housekeeping, wanting to know if we were going out so they could clean our room.

I hopped off the bed and opened the door.

‘Surprise!’

OMFG.

I blinked.

Then blinked again.

Then I screamed.

‘Bella? Roxy? Oh my God!!’

‘Soph!’

They both threw their arms around me and we all jumped up and down with excitement.

‘How did you? When did you…?’
