“We’re actually late,” Bradly replies, hesitantly.

Pressing her lips together with disappointment, I felt the room tilt as the air was pulled from my lungs. Reaching for the power source on her chair, Stephanie’s about ready to walk away. “Guess we’ll have to catch up later,” she says, forcing a polite smile. “My friends are waiting for me anyway,” she adds, hitching her thumb over her shoulder. “I’ll see you around,” I hear her say as she pulled away.

Frustrated that I was letting her down yet again, it put me in a hard place with having to abide by my contract.

“I’m sorry, sir. I mean Logan,” he apologizes, stumbling over his words.

“It’s fine,” I huff, dragging my hand through my hair as I watch Stephanie disappear in the same direction her friends had. “Let’s just get it done,” I groan, with the last bit of energy I had left.

Walking back to Bradly’s cabin, I couldn’t get the look of her broken heart out of my head. Wishing I could chase after her and make things right, I knew I couldn’t, at least not right now. Making things right between us will take some time. I’m more than willing to give Steph all the time she needs.

My eyes narrow on Bradly, who walks beside me.

“I’m sorry if I took you away from something important,” he finally spoke up.

Not wanting him to see the pain written all over my face, I turn away. “It’s fine,” I mumble, but really it wasn’t.

“Was that someone you knew?” Bradly asks, referring to Stephanie as we approach his cabin.

“Yes, she’s a friend from high school,” I reply, a groan building in my chest. Sensing my lack of enthusiasm, Bradly uses his keycard to enter the room without another word.

Walking into his room, Bradly’s accommodations are much smaller compared to mine. Moving into his space, the laptop on the table was already ringing. Rushing ahead of me, Bradly seemed panicked. “That’ll be the coach,” he says, fumbling with the mouse to answer the call.

“Finally,” Coach Wayward barks. “What took so long?”

“Have you seen the size of this boat? It’s easy to get turned around,” I chuckle, hoping it’ll soften my sour mood.

“Well, while you were taking your time, Leon Stark called to say he’s moving your meeting up to tonight,” he says, drawing my attention to the laptop.

“Tonight? My meeting wasn’t until Monday.”

“Mr. Stark has a busy schedule and wanted to make plans with you right away in case he couldn’t fit you in later.”

Tossing my hand through my hair, I tug on the follicles in order to get the blood flowing. Knowing how important this meeting was for my career as a future chef, I needed time to prepare. Meeting with Mr. Stark and possibly cooking beside him was surely a great way to generate some buzz, but knowing I would cook with my grandfather’s idol put even more pressure on my shoulders.

“Coach, my presentation isn’t finished. I was planning on finalizing it over the weekend,” I said, the panic already building in my chest.

This meeting is too important to wing.

“I’m sure whatever you have prepared will be enough,” the coach offers, while I pace the room.
