I wonder what happened?

Sensing her disappointment, Lila’s excitement lessened with every question we brought up.

“If you’re worried about transportation to Los Angeles, I assure you the employees are completely prepared to care for disabled passengers. Whatever you need, I promise we will make it happen.”

“I’m in,” Jade sang. “Where do I sign?” She asked.

Taking a deep breath, I put all of my anxiety to the side and live a little. What’s the worst that could happen? I have a little fun for a change.

“I’m in too. If I can get an extension on my deadline?” I supplied.

Giving me a wink, before turning towards Taylor, “What about you, Taylor?” Lila asked, shifting the attention her way.

“Actually, it turns out my schedule is clear for the summer. My girls are spending their summer vacation with my parents and the Harlan girls are off to camp.”

“Excellent. And before I forget, the publishing house has extended your deadlines for three extra months.”

The feeling of relief washed over me in a giant wave. Taking in a big breath and releasing it slowly, I felt at peace.

“So, I see the event includes a formal gala,” I said. “Who’s taking me shopping?”

Everyone laughed and started talking at once.

???

Stuck in my head for the rest of the walk back to Owls, returning to work my shift after lunch with my sister. I kept running through the details Ashlynne shared about Dad’s appointment this afternoon. From the sounds of it, the doctors did an initial examination, took his blood pressure, and listened to his breathing. That kind of thing, but what really concerned me was when she said they drew some blood for blood work.

Making my way to the backroom, I pulled up behind my desk with a heavy sigh. Shifting gears towards work, I knew there wasn’t any point in stressing over the things we couldn’t control. I just had to wait. Noticing there was an email from Elora titled new book launch party, immediately the excitement made me eager to work.

Opening the email, slowly the details loaded and my heart stopped dead in its chest as the book title appeared on my screen. Growing Up Petersen The Logan Petersen Story.

What? Logan wrote a book?

Scrolling through the details, I learned it was a tell-all biography about Logan’s life, the steps he took to become the hockey player he is today, and it includes some recipes passed down from his family.

His Opa would be so proud of his recipes being shared. I wonder if he mentioned me?

Taking a deep breath, my stomach curled as my eyes stared at the cover.

“How was lunch?” Elora asked, taking up the seat from across my desk.

Closing out of the email like she had caught me looking at something I shouldn’t have been. I reached for the bottle of water sitting to my right. Chugging it back, I nodded.

“Is everything alright?” Elora’s brow shot up. “Did something happen?”

Replacing the cap on the bottle, I wondered where to begin. “Ashlynne took Dad to a doctor’s appointment this afternoon and I’m a little shook up,” I said, deciding to lead with that instead of reminding her about Logan.

“Oh no, Steph. Is everything alright?” She asked, leaning forward.

“I hope so, but it sounds like Dad’s been feeling a little more fatigued than usual.”

Elora nodded. “Your dad does so much. I’m not surprised he’s more exhausted with aging. I’m sure it’s nothing to worry about,” she offered, knowing how much of a workaholic my father could be.

“I agree, but something doesn’t feel right.”

“Do you think you need to take some time off?” She asked.

Closing my eyes, I pinched the bridge of my nose. “No, I think it’ll be alright, but speaking of taking some time off, this morning I met with my literary agent over at Dream Big. Turns out the Ocean Tides cruise line has invited a few of us authors aboard for their first authors signing event in July.”
