Page 5 of Weaver

An ocean of blush-pink roses spread up over a hill as far as the eye could see, some so plump they looked like peonies. I buried my nose in the nearest cluster, inhaling the familiar scent. “How did you know these were my favorite?” I asked, feeling the Weaver’s presence behind me before even seeing him.

“I know a lot about you.” His deep voice drifted to my ears.

That statement put me on edge, but as a clear sense of contentment settled over me, I knew my spell had worked. I was seeing the truth beneath his words and was confident I had nothing to fear.

Spinning slowly, I kept my eyes down but tried to catch a glimpse of him in my periphery. A flash caught my eye, and I looked up to find a gorgeous Victorian greenhouse standing nearby. Traipsing along the manicured path, I let my fingers graze the soft petals, making sure to avoid the hidden thorns. Entering the glass greenhouse, I inhaled deeply, enjoying more roses, foxglove, periwinkle, and poppies, all in full bloom and filling the space. The skirt of my sundress swished lightly against the leaves as I nonchalantly moved between the manicured rows. Hummingbirds flitted among a rose of Sharon while the largest monarch butterfly I’d ever seen slowly opened and closed its wings from its spot in a wild honeysuckle bush.

“I have so many questions.” I began. “Exactly how do you know a lot about me? And what type of magic are you using to control my dreams?” I hoped my directness didn’t scare him off, but I needed to understand.

Silence settled throughout the space, taking with it even the slightest rustle of leaves. Behind me, a wall of energy pressed against my back. Slowly, nervously, I turned around and came face to face with the Weaver.

He stood in front of an enormous rip in space, his eyes matching the stars behind him. A swirling galaxy of silver with the faintest hint of blue and purple shimmered against a black expanse. He lifted a muscled arm from beneath his cloak, extending his hand to me. “I have all the answers you seek. You only need to surrender and join me.”

Surrender?

I wasn’t sure I liked the sound of that.
