I’m sure he got my meaning. Kids who behaved were more likely to keep their parents. Ones who caused trouble were sent back. Whether my parents would have done that or not, it didn’t matter. I’d worried about it anyway.

He pulled out into traffic. “How did you end up in the back of a squad car?”

“A party. I couldn’t get over the fence. Fortunately, the cops called our parents and let it go at that.”

“You were lucky they didn’t want to make an example out of you.”

I shrugged. “I worried what my parents would do, not so much the police.”

“That makes sense.” Colton reached over, interlacing his fingers with mine.

I closed my eyes, resting my head against the seat. I must have drifted off because the next thing I knew, I was being lifted in the air.

“What are you doing?” I asked, secure in Colton’s arms.

“Carrying you inside.”

“I can walk.”

“You were sleeping so peacefully. I didn’t want to wake you up.”

This guy. He’d burrowed under my skin and was weaving his way into my heart.

Inside, he set me carefully on my feet, Scout weaving in and out between our legs.

“Let me take him out. Then we can figure out dinner.” He moved to the back door and opened it. Scout bounded out, barking.

“Stupid dog. He probably saw a squirrel.” Colton closed the door and crossed the room to me.

I opened the fridge to see what there was. “And you know he won’t catch it.”

He wrapped his arms around me from behind, resting his chin on my shoulder. “What are you doing?”

I smiled at him over my shoulder. “Seeing what you have to make.”

“You don’t have to do that. I’m your host.” His voice rumbled in my ear.

I turned in his arms, resting a hand on his cheek. “We’re in this together.”

It was probably too soon to act like I was his girlfriend, to take over his kitchen, but it felt right. We didn’t need official dates. With every word and touch, I was falling for him.

He turned my palm, kissing it. I sucked in a breath at the contact. The pang in my heart was sharp and sweet.

Here, in his kitchen, I was putty in his hands.

Then he kissed me, making me forget about dinner until there was a scratch at the door. Colton rested his forehead against mine. “Scout wants in.”

“Get him. I’ll figure out dinner.”

He kissed me one more time. It was quick and chaste but felt like a claiming, like I was his.

He opened the door, and Scout bounded toward me.

“Scout,” Colton reprimanded.

I got down on my knees, scratching behind his ears. “Aren’t you a cutie?”

“Don’t encourage him.”
