Chapter 11

Cahill

What a bloody nightmare of a night. It started off amazing watching my wet dream come to life and walk down the stairs to me in the most elegant gown I had picked for her. She made my heart skip a beat as she walked toward me. The black and gold made her body pop. Knowing she was wearing what I bought her made the caveman in me happy, banging his chest. It’s even better knowing I have control over her, with a little tap of a button on my phone, and she became a lust filled mess, all for me. Best purchase ever the vibrating thong. I will need to buy more.

I just can’t believe it turned all wrong within seconds. One minute I was dancing—yes me, I still can’t believe it—dancing with my gorgeous woman in my arms, and the next I was dragging her off to try to save her. Now I am leaving Sophie in my bed, in my clothes. I can hear her sniffle, while I go try sort this shit-show out. She blew me away with her strength and ability to obey me but listening to her little cry is breaking my heart. It is because of me she is in danger and crying. I am starting to like her more and more. I don’t think she will be leaving in three weeks. She is mine.

Ruairi, Liam, and I are in my office. Jonathon is talking to the guards outside to brief them in case trouble follows us back. All three of us are having a stiff Jameson on the rocks. At the dinner we were at tonight there were a lot of shady men running business deals that aren’t all quite legit. Having theTaoiseach there, well there is a strong possibility the violence wasn’t targeted at me but aimed at someone else. A lot of big players were there tonight, and it would be easy to get at someone if you are power hungry.

“Does anyone know what happened tonight and for what reason?” I ask. News can travel fast if needs be in my circles.

“No, boss. It seems it could have been aimed at anyone. I know it’s not what you want to hear right now, but we are waiting to hear what is going on with everyone else. You know as well as I do it could have been for the Taoiseach,” Liam informs me.

“I know. I just don’t like it. I need to know!” I fume, before heaving a big sigh. “A good night’s sleep will help everyone. We can regroup in the morning. Ruairi, keep an ear out in the casinos. Liam, keep an ear out on the street. The lower guys have lips on them as if they have kissed the Blarney Stone and we know it.”

As I finish up my drink. I ask about other things in the business just to make sure everything is running smoothly. It’s been a while since we have been under attack. Am I out of practice or getting too old to play these games? As I stand up Ruairi asks, “How is she?”

“She is stronger than she looks but she is scared. Hopefully she will bounce back, but you know she will ask questions and want answers. Don’t tell her anything, just palm her off. She will know you are doing it, but it’s for her own good. If there is anything she needs to know, I will tell her,” I say sternly.

I know Ruairi isn’t interested in her that way, he is only concerned for her. I am sure her friend Lauren will hear about this, then Ruairi will have to answer to her. I walk away from the men and head to my room again. Liam will sort himself out and Ruairi will head to his room to work or play something on that PlayStation. He stays up most nights fucking about on it. It’s not my thing at all.

I get back to my room and see Sophie has spread herself across my bed, like there is no room for me. What the heck? She isn’t that big. I have to roll her over to squeeze in, and she doesn’t budge. This is why I don’t like to share my bed, I remind myself. Women are selfish. I know she isn’t heavy, but my God she is like a dead weight when she sleeps. I eventually move her over so I can get into bed and rest my head. I will be lucky if can get a few hours of sleep before I have to get up and start another day.

It’s half past five in the morning when I wake, my built-in body clock. I hit the gym, grab a shower while there, then head for breakfast with Ruairi. No sign of Sophie, it’s still early, and she did have a rough night. I would like to see her before I leave, but it’s too late for that now, I need to get going its seven thirty in the morning already.

I am at the shipping yard with Ruairi just watching. He leads around here mainly. I like to stay in the shadows and only step out if I need to. I am here today to watch and listen, to see if I can pick up anything to help us know who attacked us. It isn’t the other families or the Garda, which leaves the northern paramilitary groups, but I don’t know why. I don’t play their games. I help one side with guns but that is nothing.

To me they are all boys. They need to join our league to play with the men, but they are too scared, besides, they enjoy hurting the innocent as they are easy targets while we aren’t, and they wouldn’t be able to cope with that. Also, they woulddisappearwithin a week. All families would make sure of it, those groups bring too much heat from the Garda and the media, and we don’t run like that. The shadows are our friends, that is why we have power, and they don’t. There’s wiser locked up. I can’t see anything strange here at the shipyard, Ruairi has it running like clockwork. I will head to the casino and check the books. I nod to Ruairi and head on.

The casino is quiet this morning, but it is Sunday, and most people go to church. Weird they still do that and then come here to sin, but whatever keeps them happy, and my pockets lined. I head to the office and look at the books and glance over the CCTV in case I have missed anything. Sophie would be so disappointed to know my days are usually boring. I don’t need to do the heavy stuff unless it’s really called for. Her books don’t tell her everything, and they are fantasy. In real life mafia bosses do the hard stuff in their early days, build their reputation, and then hide in the shadows until they are called upon. Ruairi and Liam do most of the dirty, nasty work now. Both need to keep their heads on straight or they will kill everyone around them; if they weren’t a part of this world, you’d think they need help, here, however, they fit right in. The CCTV footage shows everything is running smoothly. I do notice some wean trying his hand at card counting, he isn’t great, but he does have potential. I’d rather have him on my side than cheating my casino. I make a note to say something to Ruairi. I have a few guys who could teach him, they go around to the other casinos owned by other families, clean them out but also get intel for me because no one thinks they are part of any family or link them back to me.

The books look good, and I see Ruairi has a lot of our loans sorted. Some who owe us now work for my family. Legitimate jobs, like the bar in the casino or kitchen in the restaurant or cleaners. We want our money back more than we want kneecaps or bodies, they don’t make money and only bring hassle. My job is boring, living in peace means I make more money, and that is important to me, it also means I have more power in my city. I can’t find anything out of order in the casino, so I head to the restaurant. I need to keep busy.

The restaurant is buzzing this early afternoon. Sophie made the social media page and has run a few competitions and offers on certain days to try to draw in customers. I have to admit it’s working. This is the busiest I have seen the restaurant in months. I will need to thank Sophie. Maybe take her out for an evening when things calm down again. I stay in the office talking to clients on the phone and suppliers as well, when I get up to leave, I see a message on my phone.

Sophie has made you dinner. She worked hard in the kitchen today withme. But I think she needs to talk to you. Jones

I quickly reply to him.

On my way home now

Hopefully she has made something I will love like steak and chips. It will only take me twenty minutes to get home from the restaurant. When I reach my Range Rover, I see a note under a window wiper.

YOU HAVE SOMETHNG OF MINE!

I pick the note up, fold it, and put in my pocket. I call Ruairi on my way home.

“I have just got to my car and there was a note telling me I have something that belongs to someone. No names, no information telling me what I have of theirs. Does this ring any bells? Have we taken drugs off some cartel? Have we kept too many guns?”

Ruairi is quiet. “We have a system, we run the drugs and weapons like we have done for the past few years, no problems, everyone seems happy. I will have a chat with the men on the yard to make sure it’s going as smoothly as I am led to believe.”

“Thanks. I can’t think of anything else.”

I am beginning to get frustrated. Ruairi is silent but I sense he wants to say something. “Spit it out.”

“I think it could be the girl, Sophie. Ever since we took her this has all started. I know the families aren’t looking for her, as far as they are concerned she is your woman, not a prisoner, so it has to be someone else. Do we really know everything about her? Is she hiding from someone?”

I don’t know how to answer that. Is she hiding from someone? Is it because of her that has caused all this trouble for me? Here I was thinking it was because of me bringing the trouble. Does she even know she might be in danger? Can I save her? Do I want to save her? I just hang up the phone as I am on my driveway and want some dinner.
