She stared up at them. They were so big and tall and total cowboys. She could smell their cologne, and she learned so much about them. They answered any questions she had, even though she refused to answer most of their questions about herself. She learned that Monte served in a special unit in the military then was discharged and started his own private security company and assisted with the government when needed. BJ had served in a similar unit for the military then decided to come back home and take his father’s old position as town sheriff after being elected by the town people without him even knowing it. They were good men, honest men, who served their country and had morals and values. A few times in conversation she felt that they were too good to be true and too good for her.

She felt Monte’s hand against her cheek as she leaned back against the island in the kitchen.

“When can we see you again?” he asked her as he caressed her cheek.

“Well, you know where I work and where I live. Mondays the club is closed, and you have some more work to do there, so I guess on Monday.”

He pulled her into his arms and hugged her tight. She hugged him in return. They remained that way for a few seconds until Monte slowly pulled back.

BJ then took her hand and pulled her against him. He hugged her, too, and she inhaled his scent, loving the smell of their cologne and manly presence. She felt feminine and cared for in their arms.

He slowly released her and she began to walk with them toward the front door.

“We’ll call you later, okay? To talk?” BJ asked, and she nodded her head. They walked her out and she felt so odd. She had truly enjoyed their night together and she knew she cared for them deeply, but it was as if something was squeezing her chest and stopping her from truly enjoying the moment. She tried to smile and then hoped it came off as sincere even though she felt unsure.

“So you’re really not going to tell us any details?” Ava asked as the women all gathered around the living room waiting for Sally and Alexa to call.

“Why would I do that? It wouldn’t be very ladylike.” She took a sip of the iced tea she had. Her legs were tucked underneath her as she wore a pair of shorts and T-sh

irt. She felt content and not so pessimistic anymore. Both BJ and Monte texted her that they missed her already.

“You could have stayed there longer. We would have taken the call from Alexa and Sally,” Ava stated with a smile. She gave her a sideways look.

“You know that I wouldn’t miss their call. They’re almost here. They’ll be in Delite by Tuesday, and I can’t wait,” Susanna stated, and just then the phone began to ring.

She put down her glass of tea and took the call.

“No, Susanna, you’re not going!” Ava yelled as Susanna pulled off her T-shirt and went to replace it with a black one.

“What’s that on your back? What are those marks?” Paula asked as the others gathered in her bedroom.

She tossed a look over her shoulder. “You guys know what to do. We talked about this. Everything is in the safe in case I don’t return.”

“Goddamn it, Susanna, he did that to you, didn’t he? Casper beat you and whipped you? My God, you didn’t tell us everything,” Ava yelled, and Susanna turned around to face her friends.

“No, I didn’t tell you everything. There was no need to relive that time by talking about it. I got out of there and I survived.”

“Yeah, but now you’re running right back into it again. What if Casper is there? What if this guy calls him and he’s nearby? Then what?” Elise asked.

Susanna pulled open her side drawer and took out a gun. She checked to make sure it was loaded and grabbed an extra cartridge.

Ava gasped. Susanna looked up.

“I’ll do what I have to do to save Alexa and Sally. If I don’t save them, then our uncles and their goons will get them and kill them both. I’m their only hope of surviving this. That guy Brook is a bad man. He’s killed for many people, and he’s wanted by the authorities. If he happens to show up dead somewhere in Texas, then so be it.” She placed the gun in a backpack and pulled it onto her shoulder.

“I can’t believe you didn’t tell us about him and what he did to you,” Juliet stated.

“It doesn’t matter now.”

“What did Monte and the sheriff say about those scars?” Ava asked her.

“They didn’t push for answers, and as far as they’re concerned, they’ll never find out. I have to do this, Ava. You know that I’m their only hope of surviving.”

“Why can’t we help, too?” Elise asked.
