“For tonight, and then tomorrow, I’ll bring some fresh clothes.”
“Won’t your girlfriend be ... worried? Angry?”
“I don’t have a girlfriend.”
“Oh,” she said.
“What about you? Any boyfriend?” He already knew the answer, but he figured he should ask. It was the polite thing to do.
“No.”
“Then there is nothing for us to worry about.” He winked at her.
Chapter Four
Grim watched as Maeve and Charlotte left the clubhouse to which he had just returned. He was pretty sure Martha had mentioned getting a makeover. He knew how good Maeve was, and well, Charlotte was getting as good as Maeve.
“Are you heading out to Martha’s place?” he asked.
“If you’re talking about Martha Bernadette, then yes,” Maeve said. “She also mentioned about her niece wanting attention as well.”
“That’s where I come in,” Charlotte said with a smile.
He looked between the two. “Will you go easy on Betty?” he asked.
“We’re not going to do anything they don’t like,” Maeve said. “It’s some makeup and pampering. That is all. Trust me, Martha loves it.”
“I know, I know, but Betty has been through a lot,” he said. “This is the woman that was taken because of Andy.”
Maeve and Charlotte shared a look. “We know. We’ve already talked about this, and if Charlotte is feeling a little overwhelmed, we’ve already got our strategy worked out.”
Grim nodded, but he was worried. Last night, Betty slept in his arms all night long. What surprised him was he slept right along with her. It was one of the most peaceful night’s sleep he’d had in a long time. Being around Betty calmed him. He wanted to take care of her, to make sure she had everything her heart desired. After all she’d been through, he wanted her to have a good life.
He looked at Maeve and then Charlotte.
“You ever thought about asking her out for girls’ night?” he asked, figuring it would be the best solution all around.
“Girls’ night?” Maeve and Charlotte shared a look.
“Yeah, you could ask Betty and even Martha, but do you think you could ... try and reach out to Betty?” She seemed so alone in this town. He also didn’t like that she’d been living in this town before she was taken, and he didn’t even realize it. It was like she was invisible, and she wasn’t anymore.
Maeve frowned. “Are you asking us to be someone’s friend?”
“Betty’s quiet, and she’s been through a lot. Will you do this favor for me? Please.”
“Okay,” Maeve said. “We do this favor for you, but you’ve got to clear girls’ night with Doc, Savage, and Razor, because our men do not take too kindly to girls’ nights.” Maeve held her hand out. “Deal?”
“Deal. I’ll work on it now.”
He shook Maeve’s hand and headed into the clubhouse. It was his turn once again to go and check the perimeter, and he had to do it with Mac, which he hated. Ever since Mac had lost Eden through his cheating, the club brother had gone through some kind of change. He’d gone from being an unreliable piece of shit, to always being there, talking and shit. He didn’t want to hear it.
Heading into the club, Mac was already dressed, ready, and drinking coffee, as well as reading the newspaper. Grim didn’t want to deal with him, so he went straight to Doc’s office, but he wasn’t there. With Maeve coming out of the clubhouse and Doc not being in his office, that meant he was in his bedroom.
He made his way toward Doc’s room, just as the main door opened, and there was Doc.
“Hello,” Doc said.
“We need to talk.”
