Their Rejected Queen

Things were just about to get good.

A scream makes me jump into action.

“Hurry,” Sofia whispers. She’s pressed against the wall with her hand on my shoulder, still shaking me. “We can try to get out the same window you came in, but we can’t be seen.”

I blink through the darkness as my eyes adjust. Pain jolts through my temples and rushes to my eyes, and then everything transforms into shades of white and gray. But I can make out the entire room now and everyone in it.

For some reason, this doesn’t feel like Arwan’s magic.

Have I somehow absorbed the gifts of yet another supernatural?

Who knows what that infusion did to me, but Godric had been in that room as well.

I don’t question my new ability and instead scan the environment for clues.

A bunch of girls huddle in the corner as I spot something in the middle of the room. There are white splotches everywhere. I swallow past the lump in my throat when I realize it’s blood.

Because a wolf has his teeth clamped down on a girl’s neck, and he’s shaking her.

She remains limp.

Why are wolves attacking us?

Where are the guards?

“What’s happening?” I whisper back to Sofia. I’m too terrified to move.

She finds my hand and squeezes it. “I overheard one of the guards freaking out that Godric lost you. He returned at sunset and you weren’t there, and he lost his mind.”

“Lost his mind?” I repeat. I find that hard to believe. Godric barely knows me.

“They said he ordered a search,” Sofia continues. She doesn’t seem surprised by this information like I am. “When the guards found out you were in here, they were scared Godric would punish them. So they wanted to kill you and drop your body out past the perimeter before Godric found out.”

My eyes widen. “Seriously?”

She shrugs. “Just repeating what I heard.”

“Then why is a wolf going crazy in there?” I ask.

“They said they gave him something. They mentioned the word feral.”

The wolf shakes the girl again, drops her body, and then looks at the corner of girls who are holding still. Ferra steps out with one of her arms wrapped and in a sling. She wields her dagger with the other, but I suspect it’s her nondominant hand by the wobbly way she holds it.

“We can’t just leave them all to die,” I say. I have no love for Ferra or some of the others, but these girls didn’t do anything to deserve death by mauling.

Especially when I’m the reason there’s a ravenous wolf in this room.

“You can and you will,” Sofia insists, but I’m already moving.

Whatever was going on in my dreams, there’s meaning behind it. Magic manifests in strange ways. Maybe my spirit is attempting to consolidate the exposure I’ve already suffered from three very powerful males. Humans and monsters typically live apart. When it comes to compatibility, even touch can have strange consequences.

And I’ve touched all three males in some capacity.

Arwan, in particular. There’s a reason he’s front and center in my dreams.

Literally.

I used his power once. I can use it again.
