“Fee…”

“What?”

“They love sharing.”

“Right, sharing food, sharing conversation, sharing… Oh…”

Theo chuckled.

Fee’s cheeks flushed red. “Well, that’s not what I was expecting.”

The last cabin had a light shining in the window and an SUV parked beside it, but no one answered when they knocked. Theo peered in the window.

“I don’t see anyone.”

“Don’t peek!” Fee smacked his arm.

“How the hell am I supposed to look for Lena if I can’t look!”

“Maybe they went for a hike.”

“Great. What are we supposed to do now?”

Fee took his hand and tugged him back down the dirt road to their cabin. Her fingers were freezing. He stuck their entwined hands into the pocket of his coat.

“I think we should call Rafe and Ruby,” she said. “And then look over the information the man gave us at check-in. There were some popular trails nearby. We could do a little search.”

“Your hands are too cold.”

She looked up at him with a bemused smile. “I brought mittens.”

Well, he couldn’t really argue with that.

“Hi, Ruby.” Phoebe paced the small space while Theo watched her from his sprawl on the couch. It made her skin prickle when he watched her like that.

“Phoebe, thank God! What’s going on?”

“We made it to Grimm’s.”

“And?!”

“Well…” She hated lying to Ruby about her sister. The woman was beside herself with worry and Fee could tell her right now where Lena was and end this whole search. But she wasn’t entirely sure that telling Ruby that Lena was with Knox would make her feel any better.

At least that was how she was rationalizing it at the moment to allay her guilt a bit.

She cleared her throat. “We were able to check a few of the cabins but all we found was a couple of swingers and a flustered writer, but there was one cabin we couldn’t confirm. The guests were out.”

“Oh.” She could feel Ruby’s disappointment through the phone. “I was really hoping she was there. I was going to be so mad at her for not telling me where she was, but then I was going to be so damn happy…” her voice broke and Fee nearly broke too. Nearly told her the truth.

“Do you want us to come home, Ruby?”

“Maybe.”

“There are some hiking trails,” Fee ventured, knowing she was pushing her damn luck. “We thought maybe we should check those before we come back. Just in case.”

“That’s it! There was a waterfall we used to walk to from the cabins! Lena loved it there.”

“Okay! We’ll check the waterfall.”
