“Theo,” Phoebe warned.

He shook his head, coming back to himself, back to his human self anyway. He cleared his throat and flashed another smile at Sam.

“What do I owe you?”

Sam looked just as flustered as Fee felt. “Uh … thirty-two fifty.”

Theo took out his wallet. “Thirty-two bucks for candy. Man, I should have just caught us a snack in the woods.”

Sam gave a confused laugh.

“Oh, well. Her kind doesn’t go for that sort of thing anyway,” Theo said with a shrug, gesturing toward Fee.

Sam blinked.

Phoebe grabbed Theo’s arm and tugged him out of the store.

“Thanks, Sam!” Theo called over his shoulder. “Love the brow piercing, by the way.”

The poor cashier just watched them leave, fiddling with the barbell through their eyebrow. Theo grinned at Fee as they climbed into the truck.

“Do you think they’re onto us?” he asked.

Phoebe couldn’t help but giggle. “Do I think that poor cashier thinks you’re a werewolf and I’m a dryad? Probably not.”

“Phew,” he said with a dramatic wipe of his brow. He smiled at her from the driver’s seat. His real smile, the one that meant he was having fun. Fee smiled back. She was glad Theo was happy for the moment.

She didn’t think it would last too long. Not once he figured out what she was up to.

Chapter Seven

“You’re not driving my truck.”

Phoebe scowled, one hand on her hip and the other held out for the keys. “Why not? You drove the first leg.”

Theo huffed, running a hand through his hair. This was already their second store stop. Apparently, Fee needed gum. And then she’d struck up a twenty-minute conversation with the woman behind the counter about the best herbal remedy for menstrual cramps. What was supposed to be a three-hour drive had already stretched to four and they weren’t there yet. He honestly wasn’t even sure they were close. The GPS had crapped out as soon as they were out of Maple Hollow. But Fee had assured him she knew the way.

She was still waiting, hand out, petulant scowl on her face. Why did she have to stand like that, with her hip popped out and that frown he wanted to eat off her lips? Why did she have to torture him?

He needed to get off.

Badly.

He might die.

“Because I don’t trust you.”

“I’m a great driver.”

He laughed. “Fee, you are a lot of things, but a great driver is not one of them.”

Her frown slowly tipped into a smile. A devious smile. “Okay, fine. Then I need the practice.” She snatched the keys from his hand and hopped up into the driver’s seat before he could react. His low growl was drowned out by the rumble of the engine coming to life. Fee rolled down the window and grinned at him.

“Get in, buttercup. We have places to go and a missing woman to find.”

“Goddamn it, Fee,” he muttered, climbing into the passenger seat. She beamed at him. It was incredibly hard to stay mad at her when she smiled at him like that.

“I promise not to hit anything.”
