“You’re always running away from me, Fee.”

“I don’t run away from you. I like my space.” An odd thing to say when Theo had her back pinned to the freezers and she clearly didn’t mind. The bastard.

He smirked. “Maybe. But you always come back to me.”

She pushed him away with a hand on his chest. “What is with you today?” she asked, grabbing a water bottle from the refrigerator. She’d rather use her reusable one but there was nowhere to fill it other than that biohazard of a bathroom and she sure as hell wasn’t going back in there.

Theo shook himself. “I don’t know. Too much time in the truck.”

“It hasn’t even been an hour.”

“Wolves aren’t meant to be cooped up, Fee. It makes us crazy.”

He left the other part unsaid. The part she could feel, too. Being cooped up together was what was making them crazy. She did need space from Theo. It was just too painful sometimes to be this close to him and not really be able to have him.

Space was protection and now she was left defenseless.

She wandered into the last aisle and found a shelf of paperbacks. She reached for a romance and flipped to seventy percent in.

Miranda wrapped her hand around Henry’s throbbing cock and stroked roughly. He groaned. “Down on your knees,” he commanded, and she acquiesced, dropping in front of him.

She opened her mouth…

“Holy shit. Have those gotten dirtier?” Theo asked, reading over her shoulder.

Fee snapped the book shut. This was the last thing she needed. She put the book back and grabbed a murder mystery instead. Much better.

“How did you skip right to the sexy part?” he asked with a grin.

“Secret talent.”

“How handy.”

“It can be,” she said with a sly smile of her own before heading up to the register. She couldn’t help but take a perverse pleasure in hearing Theo growl and curse behind her. At least she wasn’t the only one in pain.

“Hello,” she said cheerily to the person behind the counter.

They glared at her in return.

She put her book on the counter and Theo plunked the basket, filled with their road snacks, down beside it.

“Good afternoon,” he said, that charming smile creeping back onto his face.

“Hey,” the clerk, Sam—according to the crooked name tag—blushed up to their half-shaved hairline. Because of course they did.

Sam scanned the groceries while Theo leaned against the counter, his green eyes flashing merrily. Phoebe nearly made a snarky comment about him just coasting through life on his good looks alone, but she knew better.

She knew under the pretty smile lay a lonely, hurt little wolf.

He winked at her.

“Stop doing that,” she said with an annoyed huff. She hated when he was like this, all fake smiles and flirty casualness, like all of a sudden, he didn’t feel any of the things roiling beneath the surface. She hated it because she wasn’t as lucky. She couldn’t push it away as easily.

“Now who’s being grumpy?” he asked, nudging her with his shoulder. “Let’s get some snacks into you.” He grabbed a candy bar from the pile Sam had already rung up and peeled back the wrapper. He handed it to her with an apologetic smile. A peace offering.

She took it and bit into the gooey chocolate, letting a small moan of pleasure escape her lips. Theo went rigid at the sound, his eyes dark, the green engulfed by his dilated pupils. He looked ready to pounce.

Sam watched with fascination from behind the counter.
