“We measure the sugar,” she responded. She measured it very carefully. Noah reached for the brown sugar and attempted to pack it down.

Attempted.

“You have to pack it,” she told him.

“I am packing it.”

“You’re gently encouraging it.”

“I don’t want to overwhelm the sugar.”

Then he got a little too excessive.

Claire laughed. “That is aggressive.”

“You said to pack it.”

“Not like it owes you money.” She reached around him to fix the measuring cup. He was watching her, not the sugar.

“Are you paying attention?” she asked.

“Noah.”

“You’re very distracting.”

Claire felt heat creep into her face and immediately turned back to the counter. “Next we need vanilla.”

Noah poured the vanilla without measuring it.

“That’s too much,” she said.

“No, it isn’t.”

“It absolutely is.”

“It smelled right.”

“That is not a unit of measurement.”

“It should be.”

Claire checked the bottle. “You just added enough vanilla for a small bakery.”

“Then these are going to be excellent.”

He cracked it perfectly.

She stared.

Even she struggled to crack an egg well.

“What?” he questioned.
