Dare to Stay

by Amber Nicole

“Which dare?”

“The dare.” She swats his arm.

He glances at me and Harper. “The one where you two sent her into a crowd to assault me?”

“She held your hand.” Harper rolls her eyes. “That is not assault.”

“I did not consent to the hand-holding.” He winks at Ivy.

“You took her to a coffee shop after.” Harper reminds him.

“I was gathering evidence.”

Ivy shakes her head. “If I hadn’t grabbed his hand, none of this would exist.”

Gray looks at her.

The teasing leaves his face.

He leans closer and kisses her temple. “You would have found me eventually.”

“That seems statistically unlikely,” I say.

Four sets of eyes glare at me.

Gray narrows his eyes. “You really know how to support a moment.”

“I support accuracy.” I shrug.

Harper starts laughing.

Ivy does too, though she is crying again at the same time.

Gray reaches into the tissue box and hands her another one.

“We started with a dare too, dimples.” Harper smiles down at Micah as he takes her hand and presses his mouth to her knuckles.

She looks at him with the same expression Ivy gives Gray. More obvious, because Harper has never done anything subtly in her life, but it is there.

Ivy sighs. “If I hadn’t grabbed Gray’s hand...”

Harper nods. “And if I hadn’t asked Micah to be my fake boyfriend…”

The two women look at each other.

Then at me.

Gray looks at me too.

Micah takes slightly longer, which gives him plausible deniability.

I set my iced coffee on the windowsill.

“No.”

Harper sits up. “We didn’t even say anything.”

“You didn’t have to.”
