I looked at her for a moment. “That is something I don’t have an answer to.”

“Have you ever known any of those couples?”

“What couples?”

“Vampire couples.”

“I suppose I’ve run across some. But to be honest, I haven’t spent much time with vampires.”

“Isn’t that weird? When you live forever, doesn’t it make more sense to make connections with others who do as well?”

“I guess I’ve always preferred humans.”

“Why?”

“I suppose it’s because you have something to lose.”

“You mean our lives?” she asked, face scrunching.

“In a way, yes. You’re very aware that there is an end. So you live your lives differently. More fully. I find some vampires, without that expiration date, become quite selfish after several generations. They become out of touch.”

“And you try to stay connected.”

“I like to think so.”

“Do you… regret being turned?”

“That’s a complicated question. I miss the vibrancy life had when it was all still new. But immortality has its perks.”

“I could finish my TBR list.”

“You think that. Then you add hundreds of new ones every year… for eternity.”

“I would miss this,” she said, pointing to her food. “I would have to stock up on that medicine to be able to taste food. And coffee.”

“That would matter… if you drank coffee.”

She rolled her eyes at that. “Maybe you just don’t like my coffee because you need really strong notes to taste anything at all. The Fangs Out guys only ever seem to like dishes that are really spicy or flavorful. Okay. Take this away from me. I can’t breathe I’m so full.”

Before I could move to do so, she took another quick bite.

I didn’t remember the last time I enjoyed something as much as Maggie enjoyed her food.

No.

That wasn’t right.

Because I enjoyed her that way.

The sound, touch, and taste of her.

Even just remembering had me aching.

I hadn’t felt an attraction so fierce in… I didn’t know if I’d ever felt it before, to be honest. And it was something strange and wonderful after all these years to experience something new.

“What’s that look for?” she asked, head tipped to the side.

“What look?”
