Nope, but if it’s what I think it is, I’m in for an awkward conversation . . .
Then I flipped to my text chain with Gabriel. I took a deep breath before typing.
Jade
Do the girls need me for school today?
Gabriel
They seem to be in a good mood, but they wouldn’t say no to seeing you.
I’m also making eggs.
I stared at the message for a long time before sighing and getting dressed for the day.
It was time to face the music.
My hands shook as I knocked on the door. Gabriel opened it immediately.
“Morning. I just finished everything up.” He gave me a smile and gestured for me to follow him. I could only stare.
Wren wouldn’t lie to me, and I knew he’d seen me. Why was he playing it cool?
I said hello to Agnes and Beatrice, watching their reactions carefully. They had been arguing, but stopped to acknowledge me when I walked in, then returned to whatever they’d been yelling about.
Nothing was different.
Gabriel served me a plate of spicy eggs and sat next to me.
Was he hiding it from the girls?
I didn’t mention it as I ate, nor did I mention it on the drive to school. Agnes and Beatrice were less angry this time, but they were hesitant about going in.
“Thank you for coming this morning,” Gabriel said.
“Yeah. No problem.”
He nodded, and I waited for him to mention it. He didn’t say anything else until we pulled back out onto the road.
“You seem better today.”
“I am. I got good sleep.”
This was my in. This would be where he would mention it.
There was still nothing.
“Do you wanna go to the library?” he asked instead.
I stared. For some reason, he was hiding it.
It was so tempting to tell him I knew something was up, but Gabriel was also very good at hiding things. Far too good at it, actually.
And I was a petty bitch when I wanted to be.
I didn’t like being lied to. And the only solution was to catch the lie in the act.
