“He said when everything is finalized, he’s replacing it.”
“Okay.”
“Stop saying okay like that.”
“How should I say it?”
“Supportively.”
She cleared her throat. “Okayyyyy!”
I hung up again, but that time I didn’t call back. She texted thirty seconds later.
Klair: love you stupid
Blair: blocked.
Klair: ask your promise fiancé’s wife if she’s excited too
I spent the next week staring at my hand. My entire relationship existed in the future tense. The ring changed that because I could touch the future.
Caleb came over for lunch three days later. He walked into my kitchen while I was making sandwiches and wrapped his arms around me from behind.
“You wearing it.”
I smiled. “Every day.”
He kissed my neck. “You like it that much?”
I held my hand up. “I’ve almost crashed my car twice looking at it.”
“Please don’t make me hide it.”
“I’m kidding.”
I wasn’t completely kidding. He laughed then his phone rang. His body stiffened behind me. After two years, I knew him. I looked at the screen on the counter to see Ravenna’s name.
Caleb reached around me, declined the call, and turned his phone facedown.
“Anyway.”
I stared at the phone. “You don’t need to answer?”
“No.”
“What if it’s important?”
“I’m with you.”
My heart fluttered from that one sentence.
I smiled. “Okay.”
Caleb kissed me and lifted me onto the kitchen counter. Lunch became irrelevant. We made love on the kitchen counter and I screamed his name to the top of my lungs.
“I want to feel this forever.”
I loved when he told me that. It made me know that in our future marriage, we’d never lack in the sex department. I had got on birth control, so he always filled me with his love. That was actually my favorite part. I loved when he would look me in my eyes while he did it. It was like I was seeing the love that we had built through so much chaos and he was steady working to get it all figured out. Our love making created the perfect sounds.
