I blow out a slow breath. “I don’t know.”

“They won’t make this easy.”

“No, they won’t,” I agree.

At the door, I slip my boots on before turning back to find him exactly where I’d left him, watching me.

“Sera.”

“Yeah?”

“Don’t take too long.”

“I won’t.”

“I mean it.”

He crosses the room until he’s standing in front of me, one hand braced on the door, the other pinching my chin.

“You’re my fiancée now, Sera.”

“You’re jumping ahead of yourself.”

His thumb stops against my chin.

“You will be.”

I lift my left hand and press it over his heart. “And you’ll be mine.”

The smile that answers me is faint, but it’s the most unguarded one I’ve ever seen on his face.

“Glad you paid attention, little wild thing.”

I lift onto my toes and brush a kiss across his lips before reaching for the door handle.

“I’ll see ya soon.”

“I’ll be counting on it.”

Cold air prickles over my skin the second I pull away and step into the hall. I glance over my shoulder to find him leaning against the doorjamb, his arms folded and a slight furrow between his brows.

I offer him a smile while my fingers press against the ring through my top.

If my family won’t accept Fionn, I’ll have to choose where I stand. God help me, I can’t turn my back on them, but how the hell could I walk away from him?

Outside, the dogs prowl through the yard, and every so often they bark at the wind.

Reclining in the old chair, Rafe takes a gulp of coffee before adding the paper to the stack without reading it.

"I was hoping ya wouldn't notice."
