“Throw in a foot rub, and you’ve got yourself a deal.”
Milo shook her hand. “Payment is due tonight.”
“Of course.”
When it looked like Mathias would win, Wilda shook her head. “Looks like I backed the wrong horse.”
He won the first game and the second. Then he held out his arms and grinned at Rachel. “Sorry, sweetheart, you’re not as good as you think you are.”
“Wow.” She pointed at him. “Don’t call me sweetheart.”
He bowed slightly, then turned to Abe. “Looks like it’s you and me for the final round.”
“Beer break?”
“Sounds good.”
They all descended on the food table to finish the pizza and start on the other snacks. Wilda brought out the salsa and tortilla chips, and the next half-hour was spent on food, beer, and rehashing the games.
Abe emptied his beer bottle. “Okay, Mathias, are you ready to do this?”
“I’m ready.”
The final match went three games, but Mathias won in the end. He shook hands with Abe. “I didn’t really think I’d come out on top when we started this thing.”
“You earned it.”
Wilda brought the money to him. “Congratulations, Matty.”
“Are you guys sorry you invited me now?”
Milo laughed. “No. We’ll get you next time.”
“I’ve got to tell you, that’s the most fun I’ve had in a very long time.”
“I’m glad you joined us.”
Rachel walked over and shook his hand. “Not bad.”
“Right back at you.”
She went to Milo and hugged him. “Thank you for not making me leave.”
“You’re welcome.”
“I need to get home to our furry son.”
“I can’t believe you left him home alone.”
“I know. I’m a terrible dog parent.” She backed up a few steps. “Thank you all for letting me play. I love you.”
Wes smiled. “You’re welcome anytime, Rachel.”
She looked at Milo. “You might want to run that by your brother.” She blew a kiss to the room. “Until the next time, then.”
She left, and Luke followed her a moment later.
Mathias looked at Milo. “Is Luke…”
